In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Brushes to bronze
Wave all your wands
Channeling some sacred calm
So this night I might
Dig up the box
Smash all the locks
Exhume my memories
Bludgeoned naiveties
And a saddest epiphany
The wind is blowing all wrong
The lights blink off and on
You were my queen
And I your pawn
I fell for you
So now make me a statue
Because statues won't bruise
When drops crash the tin
And crushed aluminum
Sends sparks off the tracks
Of hushed panic attacks
Senecan to the wind
Until then
Brushes to bronze
Wave all your wands
Hailing some hypnotic calm
So I might reveal
This bended appeal
Was anything real
Was one bit of it real
Or all another ideal
Shown and then slain
I've never felt so ashamed
So stop everything
And explain it so carefully
Were you ever in love
Wave all your wands
Channeling some sacred calm
So this night I might
Dig up the box
Smash all the locks
Exhume my memories
Bludgeoned naiveties
And a saddest epiphany
The wind is blowing all wrong
The lights blink off and on
You were my queen
And I your pawn
I fell for you
So now make me a statue
Because statues won't bruise
When drops crash the tin
And crushed aluminum
Sends sparks off the tracks
Of hushed panic attacks
Senecan to the wind
Until then
Brushes to bronze
Wave all your wands
Hailing some hypnotic calm
So I might reveal
This bended appeal
Was anything real
Was one bit of it real
Or all another ideal
Shown and then slain
I've never felt so ashamed
So stop everything
And explain it so carefully
Were you ever in love
