This song sounds great, but the lyrics are pretty sad.
The first thing I thought of when I heard the lyrics of the first verse is 9/11. It's obviously something that has affected Gerard a lot - after all, it indirectly led to the creation of MCR - and it's interesting that he's chosen to weave it into this song, condsidering how many years have now passed since the bombing.
It's the chorus that really sounds sad. The lines, "If there's a place that I could be / Then I'd be another memory," tied in with what's said in the verses ... he's essentially saying that he wishes he were dead, that he had died with his friends. It's very depressing.
I hope the band will reveal more about their characters for this album. This storyline already seems infinitely more interesting than that of The Black Parade.

And yeah, I see the imagery of 9/11. I think it's a reference to 9/11 but that he put it in because it also ties into the post-apocalyptic world where the story takes place.

@RenaSunflash Yeah "covered in all my friends" reminds me of this show/movie where a woman in the military was talking to her fellow soldier. There was an attack and he friend blew up all over her. She was later having flashbacks in the shower. While she was washing shampoo out of her hair, she thought she was wiping the gore off her face

Anyone think the burning imagery in the first & second verse has to do with Gerard witnessing the people falling from the buildings on 9/11?

man i dont know about you guys but i really want the album to come out NOW. im asking for it for christmas for my boyfriend(: even though its coming out in november... but i love this song already!!! if this is a hint of whats to come, i'm very excited.
I think this band's actually gotten better since The Black Parade. I never got too into Bullets or Three Cheers, but The Black Parade is one of my favorite albums of all time - the concept part of it is really great, and it was just done very well. And this is also going to be a concept album, I believe? If they do it half as well as they did it on that album, this should be a great work.
I like this song a lot, particularly the synth bit at the beginning. It's really very sweet and honest feeling. Rather not think too hard on meaning since I've only listened to it a few times...
And I agree with Adalia - Na Na Na and Only Hope are really very different. And both are completely different from anything else this band's done before. I love how they actually attempt to make progress musically; something you don't hear from a lot of bands as mainstream as MCR. Prog rock in pop culture is essentially dead, but this band certainly makes the attempt without ever crossing into an area where they'd lose their audience. Damn good band, really.
I love this band so much, this song is really good, and I love Na Na Na just as much, but does anyone else think that the first verse is a holocaust reference, or it sounds like he is looking back on a nuclear holocaust or something like that. Go MCR!
Gah, did you guys forget the concept of the album? Yes, it could be a reference to 9/11, and he could still be inspired by the whole imagery about it, but this takes place in a apocalyptic world in 2019. Apparently the first verse follows a battle between the Killjoys and the Dracs, if I had to guess right.

The band has actually stated that this album is not really a concept album like The Black Parade. NaNaNa is the only song that really touches the story line, the rest are actually political statements. Even Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back is about Gerard's daughter.

Loving the new sound! I think the lyrics can be interpreted a little deeper than just 9/11. They reference the selling of guns & many other disasters that have occurred; leading up to the dystopian world of the new album. The message I take from the chorus is that although the mistakes of the past are figuratively burned into memory, there is always a new reason to continue fighting to live.
