The Ghost of You Lyrics
Pretty obvious meaning, if you ask me. Of course, everyone has their own interpretations. There is no "true" meaning to a song. What ever it means to you IS the true meaning. (:
"I never said I'd lie and wait forever If I died, we'd be together I can't always just forget her, but she could try"
- He's not going to wait, knowing they can't be together now, so he's thinking of suicide to possibly be with her, and stop all the pain that the ghost of her, or memories, are causing. He can't just forget about it all, and her. It's not that easy. But maybe she could at least try now.
"At the end of the world Or the last thing I see You are never coming home, never coming home Could I? Should I?"
- He knows he's not getting her back, so it might as well be the end of the world to him.. And this might be him questioning suicide again. Just more expressively. & It sounds to me like he's asking "Could I be with her if I did?" and then "Should I do it?" If that is the case.
"And all the things that you never ever told me And all the smiles that are ever ever"
- It hurts to think of the things that could have possibly been. Maybe they never had a chance to say/do/be what they wanted with eachother, or at least not to him.
"Ever.. get the feeling that you're never all alone? And I remember now At the top of my lungs, in my arms she dies.. she dies!"
- Although she is gone, maybe he still has some kind of connection with her.. The ghost of her(memories), as I'm guessing the song suggests, or his love for her. But it's still very painful to be reminded of, or remembering. I think it's expressing how much with "At the top of my lungs, in my arms she dies".
"And all the wounds that are ever gonna' scar me For all the ghosts that are never gonna' catch me" If I fall.. If I fall.. (Down)"
- He has been, and will continue to be hurt by it for a while. He's scarred. Either way, he will try his best to go on though. But he's still not sure if he will be able to.
I must disagree with you but like you said everyone has their own interpretations. If you take a closer look at the name of the song and the lyrics, IMO he is talking about a girl he loved who died. I believe you are right about the suicide, because by killing himself, it will allow him to be with her again on the other side (if there is one). It is even given away in this part...

she dies in his arms and at this part it is him remembering that feeling that she is still with him in spirit or as a "ghost" which the song is so aptly named after all. If you think of it from my perspective, the rest is self explanatory in a "she is dead" point of view.
The song is unrelated to the music video, and that is where people are getting their interpretations messed up. If it were about the video, then mikey would be a girl("she" in the lyrics). It is about a guy whose girlfriend dies, and he is sitting around waiting to die too because, to him, there is nothing else worth living for. He is haunted (ever get the feeling that your never all alone) by her smiles and the relationship that they would have had (all the things that you never ever told me). When he is alone he thinks back to the day she died in his arms. he knows that he will only be with her again in the afterlife (at the end of the world or the last thing I see...you are never coming home). Could I? Should I? refers to whether he has the courage or will to go through with suicide "to see her again."
pretty simple lyrics to interpret but most of the people on this site probably failed english lit.
I'm with you there. I feel the same way about this song.

He misses the girl he loved that as died. long story short. You shouldn't be bickering over such an amazing song. It's great, that's all that matters, is it not? Shutup and respect this amazing song. <3
ya know...i had a experience not too long ago that totally made me think different about this song..i was dating a girl for awhile and she broke it off with me..and i love this girl soo much..it hurt..well i continued to love her for a long time and tried alot to get back with her until finally one day i realized that all she did was treat me like shit and i deserved so much more...well one day she came to me and wanted me back..but at that moment she almost seemed dead to me..like i didnt want anything to do with here..so this experience made me think..maybe he had a relationship like mine..just bear with me and think outside the box for a moment...
i never said i'd lie in wait forever (he got tired of wating for her to love him again) if i died we'd be together (she is dead to him now..and hes using death as a metaphor saying if he died then they would both be dead) i can't always just forget her (it was hard getting over her) but she could try (now he thinks she should try getting over him)
at the end of the world or the last thing i see (she is the last thing he sees now) you are never coming home, never coming home could i? should i? (saying he wont get back with her..but does contemplate it "could i? should i")
and all the things that you never ever told me and all the smiles that are ever, ever, ever (maybe about all the lies...and now he knows and he wont be haunted by her smiles anymore) get the feeling that you're never all alone (implying the cheating she did with other men) and i remember now at the top of my lungs, in my arms she dies, she dies (she finally told him about the lies and now she is def. dead to him)
the rest of the song is pretty much the same...i could easily be wrong..but please give it a look and think about it...i love MCR and they show so much depth on this album and i see a huge future for these guys..thanks for listening
@lost_all_chance This is one of the most painfully relatable interpretations I've ever read. What a song.

There's been quite a few songs about being haunted as of late. And I think that's what this is about. People always like to think to be haunted means there is an actual physical manifestation of a ghost around to do so.
But in reality, there is so many other subtle ways. To lose a lover is to lose that connection you have with them. Or is it? Where does all that energy go?
To have someone in your head, or always the emotion in your heart of someone, is just so painful. And the ghost exists within you.
"at the end of the world or the last thing i see"
I have been seeing a lot of artists writing the "end of the world" in their lyrics as of late. Perhaps this has to do with the "end of the world" feeling? That feeling where someone dramatic happens in your life and you just float around feeling like everything is just going to fall a part.
Very good and sad song.
yeah, i definitely see the trends as well, and not just in music.

I can't believe no one has commented on this song. Very powerful lyrics. Very powerful song. Very powerful CD. I think this song is just about a guy that can never have again a girl he once had. I think she died? His references to her never coming home, i took that as her never coming back to him. Who knows though. Great song.
i thought he said, "if I died, we'd be together"

If you ask me its him debating wether he should start getting over her, and the "dying" represents what would happen to their possibly new realtionship if he decided to give up.

I agree with you, My Chemical Romance are a very special band to me, and create such powerful and moving songs, like The Ghost Of You, witch express emotions that other mands just can't do.

I think that this song to me means that the guy has gone to war and didnt come back because he died. I mean have you seen the video for this song? It's very sad, but the way it's done makes it seem like the guy died.
"You are Never coming home Never coming home"
It reminds me of a part from Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage" when henry is handed a package by another soldier who thinks he is going to die in battle to give to his family.
my interpretation, most closely touched on by 'lost all chance' is not that someone has already died. i feel like this song is about the risk of love. its about the fear of loss. im sure everyone has been in that situation where you start to realize just how intensely you feel about someone and the thought of it not working dawns on you. its a grimly romantic way to weigh the options...is loving her worth all the haunting it will cause him if he loses her? i feel like the song implies that she is alive and all the lyrics about what he has lost is a jolt into his future that he could experience.
"i cant always just forget her, but she could try" "if i fall" "could i, should i?"
death taken on a much less literal level could mean death in faith, death in love, a broken heart.
yea I agree.but it sounds sad.

I will agree this is probably the song with the most depth on the cd. Or atleast the way I take it.
