In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
My friends (shouts)
Are my addictions
They forgive me for everyone I’ve been
Let’s take a shot (shouts)
Of everything you’ve got
Wash away the memories of everything I’m not
I’ll say goodbye…
Wake me up
It’s over
You’re on your own
You hate (shouts)
Your own reflection
It reminds you of every dirty sin
So take your shot (shouts)
See what you’re not
Induced delusions to a past that we forgot
Wake me up
It’s over
You’re on your own
For the first time
I’m sober
You can’t hate me now
Please hate me now
Wake me up
It’s over
You’re on your own
For the first time
I’m sober
You can’t hate me now
It’s so hard
To end this, but
I won’t be something I’m not
I’ll take back everything I lost
You’re on your own! (shouts)
Are my addictions
They forgive me for everyone I’ve been
Let’s take a shot (shouts)
Of everything you’ve got
Wash away the memories of everything I’m not
I’ll say goodbye…
Wake me up

You’re on your own! (shouts)
