With a heart attack on your plate
You were looking back on your days
How you spend them all in a blur
When they asked if you were for sure

Let the sugar melt down your throat
Cause you know it's sweet getting old
With a lollipop and a rope
Let the hospital be a home

Cause your knees are scratched and your eyes are black
Put a plaster there and I'll sign your cast

In the lighter notes at the end
Some familiar names in the tiny print
On the cover page of the year
Grainy photographs, greasy hair

But it's noon o'clock and you're still asleep
And your coffee's cold, your coffee's icy
Cause your knees are scratched and your eyes are black
Put a plaster there and I'll sign your cast

Classic Hollywood is a kid
With the volume up all the way
Now you do the same and you're right
things are better in black and white

But there's another girl and another day
And your favourite foods still taste the same
Cause your knees are scratched and your eyes are black
Put a plaster there and I'll sign your cast

When the best and the brightest turn the televisions on
And your seat belt's strapped and your helmet's on

I'm so desperately in love with this song. I think it's just about looking back on your life and experiencing nostalgia.

    Beautiful Opener to the album.

    Couple of quick corrections

"With a heartattack on your plate." I'm pretty sure that's the line.

"But there's another girl in another day And your favourite food still tastes the same" This one I'm 100% sure of

has anyone figured out the line that comes before the "classic Hollywood as a kid" verse?

Corrections according to the lyrics sheet:

"with a heart attack on your PLATE" "with a lollipop and a ROBE" "and your favourite food still tastes the same" instead of "and your fate will feel and taste the same" "WHEN the best and the brightest turn their televisions on"

    My Interpretation

I'm thinking the line "But there's another girl in another day and your favorite food will still taste the same" is saying that there's still someone out there, and that something like your favorite food will still comfort you and taste the same. Even if things are changing.

Well, those were embarrassing mistakes. Though, to be honest, I actually prefer my versions - starting it on a plane shows how the bad stuff can get to you even when you're trying to escape from it all, the rose/lollipop combo is odd but somehow quite romantic and evocative and "your fate will still feel and taste the same" just sounded really cool to me. Might take it for a song of my own now ...

As for meaning it seems pretty simple - someone looking back on their life, feeling bittersweet about all the stuff that they've left behind.

The way he sings "cause you know it's sweet getting old" and "some familiar names in tiny print" both kill me. It sounds like he's smiling.

Instantly fell in love with this song. Reguardless of its meaning, it's fantastic.

pretty simple: somebody in their final days reflecting back on a life well-lived. it's almost haunting, in my opinion.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
