woe is me
faithless you and selfish me
i will leave a key for you outside my doorway

woe is me
one if by the land, or two by sea
so won't you leave, for me, a light outside your doorway

on a ladder from there to here i'll climb
all this clatter between my ears i find
does it matter if i cant clear my mind?
There's a right and a wrong time

Woe is me
Sentimental you and faithful me
And i will be the one to gaze on you discreetly

Slow your speed
Turn yourself around and follow me
Cause i will be the one who preys upon you sweetly

on a ladder from there to here i'll climb
all this clatter between my ears i find
does it matter if i can't clear my mind?
There's a right and a wrong time

on a ladder from there to here i'll climb
all this clatter between my ears i find
does it matter if i can't clear my mind?
There's a right and a wrong time

kay so, he really likes this girl and he's telling her that she should give him a sign that she likes him in return.

    My Interpretation

Why is this guy not big yet...??

    anyway.. nicoleyyy222 sums it up.

I'll add one thing: The girls is faithless and sentimental ...killer combo really. She is practical yet sensitive to the ebb and flow of the world. A modern hippy.

I am guessing and suggestion this girl doesnt know what she wants, but she does know that she likes this guy..who ever he might be to her..she doesnt know yet..

And the guy...is trying to figure this girl..and all the clatter in his brain is making hem do unconventional things... girl got him in a tizzy. effing girls and their prowess... ;)

head down friend yet keep your chin up... (?) paradoxical=women duh right.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
