Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Begging like you might take order in your own hands
I stare, it seems like I don't care, drop
a chance in your hands then
I know that bad's got to fix itself, correct over time
And I know 'cause I've got the cure, I've
got a cure for your crimes
All I dreamed up, all that seemed like luck seems silly to you now
All I said to you, all I did for you seems so silly to me now
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Screaming like no one might call the cops and arrest you this time.
Standing back against my building's back
door
I you're hoping for a ride.
I know the world's been mean to you, I've got a cure, hold tight.
I know the world's not fair to you, I've
got a cure for it's crimes
All I dreamed up, all that seemed like luck seems silly to you now
All I said to you, all I did for you seems so silly to me now
Oh oh when you say it
So so slowly to me
Oh oh well I keep going
Oh no I ran while knowing
No no I know you need it
So so I need it too
And oh oh I must keep going
So so you must too
Oh oh when you say it
So so slowly to me
Oh oh well I keep going
Oh no I ran while knowing
No no I know you need it
So so I need it too
And oh oh I must keep going, so you must too
I've got a cure, I've got the cure for you
All I dreamed up, all that seemed like luck seems silly to you now
All I said to you, all I did for you seems so silly to me now
All I dreamed up, all that seemed like luck seems silly to you now
All I said to you, all I did for you seems so silly to me now

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
Does anyone else think this song sounds alot like "Lovesong" by The Cure? Hint hint.
Ahhh! Before I replied to the comment above I was thinking the Cure! I love them and so the title of the song in general made me think of them. Anytime I see the words "the cure" I think the band.. Lol now im listening to love song in one ear and the cure (TnS) in the other.. Lol
This is based off of the live version found on Youtube. I realize these may not be correct, so I greatly appreciate any help in deciphering the lyrics -- especially the ones I couldn't get. I'm not too sure about the section with the ((???)) at the top and bottom.
my goodness, you're brave to attempt this one xD I really wanted to get either the cure or the ocean but in both cases I started listening to them, ready to write things down, and as soon as she started singing I was terrified and gave up hahaha you did really well though, I can't seem to figure out anything you didn't get. can't wait for the cd so we can get all the lyrics down for sure!
I'm sure once we know the lyrics, we'll be able to listen to the Rifflandia concert and go, "Oh, it's so obvious now!" xD

{Seriously, why can't we edit here!? They need to fix that. xD}

Yeah, I listened to it again, and it does sound like "a."
the reason that they don't let just anyone edit is because people would be having epic unclear lyric battles all the time =P
correct over time, not overtime
and it's all that seemed like luck, not seemed like love. =)
I don't know. I'm hearing "love," and I think that makes more sense with the song. She's saying that all the moments she thought were love seem so ridiculous and silly in the other person's head. Therefore, doing all of those things and saying all of those things seem silly to her {i.e., Tegan} because of that. Does that make sense?
but listen really closely. she clearly pronounces a "ck" sound. I feel like love would be better, but she's definitely saying luck here. I kind of think she might have been saying love in the rifflandia recording, though..but not sure.
and listen to all of the times she says it, too. sometimes it's clearer than other times
