If You Believe Me Lyrics

I got a chill
And I wanted to say it was you
Be still because what I'm about to say is the truth
Unless we stretch until the point of nearly breaking in two
We'll never find our weakness coming unglued

A cracked sculpture
I wanted to say it was you
Feeding vultures are why I feel the way I do
I fell in love
And I wanted to say it was you
I wanted to say it was you

If you believe me
We could stand the test of time like no one else
If you believe me
It means you'd have to disbelieve yourself

A sudden wind
And I wanted to say it was you I've never been
So confused about who knows the truth
Where to begin
Well I wanted to say it was you
Because you swore you had your hand in this too

Cause I'm here wondering what could you be thinking
Though I know you're there thinking that I wonder that all the time
I can still invade your thoughts when you're not with me
Yeah don't mind me I'm just a parasite on your mind
Yeah don't mind me I know you're wondering all the time

I think this song goes like this:

"I got a chill And I wanted to say it was you Be still because what I'm about to say is the truth Unless we stretch until the point of nearly breaking in two We'll never find our weakness coming unglued"

This verse is referring to his search for God, and wondering if he is misinterpreting God's wishes for his life. He's beginning to realize that what he thought was God's will may have been wishful thinking as he searched for a sign that he should go in the direction he wanted to.

"A cracked sculpture I wanted to say it was you Feeding vultures are why I feel the way I do I fell in love And I wanted to say it was you I wanted to say it was you"

He's denying that the feelings of maybe his fiance not being who he is meant to be with are from God, that it is people who are detrimines to pick him apart, which is why he uses vultures. He fell in love and wanted to say that it had to have been God's wishes and that this was the girl he was meant to be with, but really it was wishful thinking.

"If you believe me We could stand the test of time like no one else If you believe me It means you'd have to disbelieve yourself"

I think this might be God's voice, telling him that to listen to what God has to say, you have to ignore your own desires, or disneleive yourself. He also ends it with the phrase, "if you beleive me," emphasizing that it is our choice to beleive God, that he doesn't force us.

"A sudden wind And I wanted to say it was you I've never been So confused about who knows the truth Where to begin Well I wanted to say it was you Because you swore you had your hand in this too"

He's become so confused that he's confusing everything with God's will, even something totally small and unrelated, like a sudden wind. Everyone is telling him different things and he doesn't know who to beleive. He wants to say that his own will is God's, and doesn't understand how he could fall in love with someone if she wasn't meant to be "the one," because God promised He would have His hand in every part of our lives.

"Cause I'm here wondering what could you be thinking Though I know you're there thinking that I wonder that all the time"

He's doubting God and His will for his life, and is a little guilty at doubting God so much.

"I can still invade your thoughts when you're not with me Yeah don't mind me I'm just a parasite on your mind Yeah don't mind me I know you're wondering all the time"

At this point God's voice comes in again, saying that, even when we deny His voice, He still knows everything we're thinking. When we deny Him, he can't help us in our decisions, but only sit and watch as we deviate from His path for our life.

Please tell me if you think I'm right, wrong, stupid, whatever. I want know what you guys think! :)

I think you hit it right on. That was how I had been viewing it too, but you cleared up any verses that had confused me before. I like to look at it this way because sometimes I have trouble understanding exactly what God wants me to do. Sometimes I just pray for some kind of sign that will point me in the right direction for the next step of God's Plan. And then I'm afraid that I misinterpreted the sign. So I can relate to the song much better if I look at it like this. It reminds me...

Thanks! Yay, I'm glad I'm not crazy... Haha, and I do that all the time as well. Another reason I love this song!

The way you explained it totally made sense! Thanks!

Amazing... brilliant... best song off the new CD. I would have put this as the first single.

As far as the meaning goes... I feel it's about Matty T's breakup with his fiance. She broke up with him after she found out some things that "she just couldn't handle". Some people said that Matt cheated on her... but who knows.

I think the song is talking about after the breakout. He's still thinking about her all the time. "I felt a chill and and i wanted to say it was you." Then it moves on about him wondering what she is thinking about him. If she still likes him. He knows that he is still on her mind. The chorus is saying to believe him, whether it's about him truly loving her or about cheating on her or doing something else "she just couldn't handle."

Let me know what you guys think! Amazing song though.

Man. I love the lyrics to this song...but it's so sad. I feel sorry for the guy...

He did cheat, theres evidence here: http://www.mlive.com/entertainment/detroit/index.ssf/2009/08/podcast_mojo_in_the_morning_sh.html

im disappointed, but oh well. I still like the music :P

This whole album is making me so sad. I feel sorry for him, too.

awesomerad, that podcast didn't prove anything to me, she just said Matt cheated on her without saying anything about evidence. not saying he didn't do it, but I'm kind of leaning towards that possibility.

"I know matt. and he did not cheat on shannon! Evadently she got the wrong impresson when matt said that those songs were not about her anymore and he kept talking about another girl, which i can tell you truthfully who she is. She is the girl who god realy wants matt to be with in the future. But the thing is that they have not even met yet, ok! So how could he be cheating on her with someone he has not met? Shannon hearing him sing curl up and die and talking about a possible breakup. evedently she thought that he was cheating on her with “the girl” so she broke up with him. everthing is just one big misunderstanding mess."

I agree, I've written songs for my future wife so I know what Matt it doing, and it seems outside of Matt's character to cheat on his fiancee. I can tell he's a good guy.

I just want to say in general. Fiances don't leave their engagement over nothingness; over inferences from songs. I'm sure that you know that you always wish to trust your partner and believe them so she wouldn't of left over something like that. What made her leave? did he cheat did he not. Well he sure as heck did something that made it impossible for her to stay.

I don't know; how would you feel if your fiance started writing love songs about some other girl? It was probably mutual; they both felt that, because of this, their marriage wouldn't be very successful. The writing of other love songs was most likely the starter of these conversations. I can see how it would be misconstrued with cheating, though. He was writing songs about another girl, though he doesn't yet know who. I think, if he didn't cheat (which I think is the case,) and he was just writing songs about another girl, breaking off the engagement was probably...

this song is NOT completely about the breakup. imo, its about God and how we think we feel him/ see him in our lives, but we're aren't completely sure. he relates it to shannon at the end of the second verse... "Where to begin Well I wanted to say it was you Because I swore you had your hand in this too" i think its about how he thought God wanted their relationship but eventually realized he didnt.

as a whole, i interpret the song as being about having doubts about God and his presence in our lives. the chorus is God saying "if you believe me" you have to put aside everything else and you'll experience God in a way you havent before.

the bridge confuses me. it could be God always knowing what we're thinking and how that could be difficult to deal with. or it could be about the girl.. thoughts? anyone agree?

I believe some of the lyrics are about god and some about the break up. Like how you look for god in everyday things like statues and love and things.

idk if they all are.

I know a lot of Relient K songs are about God, but I'm pretty sure this isn't one. I don't see how you could be a "parasite on God's mind". That doesn't really make sense for me.

true that!

I agree with SwimAndy013

well, i interpreted that this song is about shannon's trust in matt. i mean, everything points in that direction because the song is pretty much self-explanatory. "if you believe me, it means you'll have to disbelieve yourself". because i learned that she turned to her family for advice, and she believed herself that it had to end. good for you shannon, you didn't hold yourself back!
