Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again :
Out where the stones lay like bones by the ocean
Out where the waves crash contempt on the land
Someone was trembling for fear of the tempest
Somebody silently reached for their hand
Said, understand that if you're cold I'll keep you warm
And besides, there's so much beauty in a storm
So come down with me to the shore
And what's more, I adore you
So tell me, what is there to fear
You think some seraph up above is trying to rob us of our love
Because the sky's not clear
My dear, you know there's not
Now listen to the rain upon the rooftop
But the wind picked up

Out where the stones stand up like thrones beside the ocean
Out where the waves make a grave of the sea
The lovers struggled in the middle of the tempest
And water angrily crawled up onto the beach
Said, hold my hand and stay with me
We'll be released
But the tide clung like an anchor to her feet
And though he tried to make the water line recede
It pulled her out into the sea
He could not break apart the waves to bring her safely back in
He watched her hand break through the surface once
Then disappear again
Forever wait inside the sea for my, my dear
I hear you
You speak in every curling wave
And sing in every violent breeze
Someday not far away from here
My dear, I swear I'll see you
And we will hear the seraphs cry
For they will still envy you and I
How they envied you and I
How they envied you and I
How they envied you and I

Does anyone else see the connection between this and Edgar Allen Poe's "Annabel Lee"?

Poe describes the death of a lover, near the ocean, and the jealously of the "winged seraphs".

I think it pays more homage rather than the same meaning.

"out where the bones lay like stones by the ocean" What are we but stones laying on the ocean? What are we more then just a leg on a chair? Beautiful metaphore...A girl who in ways he did not know saved him...saved him not really from anything "bad" because there IS so much "beauty in a storm"

"he could not break apart the waves, saw her hand break through the surface"... This is beautiful to me, like a dear loss, that he's come to terms with ... " Forever wait inside the sea for me, my dear I hear you"... He'll always come back looking for her, always come back to be with her...always find a way back to her and always find a way to hear her...even if it's through the gust of the wind or the crashing of the ocean on the seashore....

I agree that this is a metaphor but I think she still dies. She helped him through difficult times and they fell in love.

I have two ideas about the meaning to this though:

I think she could have commited suicide. Either she went through something difficult and he didn't help her or she didn't tell him and she couldn't take it anymore. With all the references about the ocean, I would say she drowned.

    Or

She died when they were most in love. Probably murdered. The storm could be when they found her but then: 'He watched her hand break through the surface once Then disappear again' There was a moment where they thought she might live but she didn't. The whole way through the song he seems to love her and when she dies, he loves her even more. He says: 'Someday not far away from here My dear, I swear I'll see you' He believes his love for her will bring them back together one day 'And we will hear the seraphs cry For they will still envy you and I' He believes even the angels will be jelous of the amount of love they have for eachother.

In my opinion, this song is beautiful, a great metaphoric story of love and death <3

@hoedown94, yeah that's what the song says, but it's not the literal meaning. It's a metaphor. The guy is afraid of some bad event happening (probably just a generic fear of anything bad happening ever) and this girl comes along and helps him out. She makes him forget his fear and they fall in love. Whenever he has problems she helps him to get through them. But then the problem he's dealing with is their relationship. Eventually this problem becomes too much and she leaves him. Suddenly his fears have been realized and he doesn't have her to help him through it. The song ends with him stubbornly repeating that he'll get her back, but in reality he has as much chance of raising the dead.

    My Interpretation

I saw the "ocean" as the girls battle with depression/various mental illnesses growing stronger and stronger. But at first she is stable and her mental illnesses are at bay. The "waves" of depression are barley there. But she's terrified of getting bad again. Then she meets a boy. Who makes her happy. She then tells him of her battle with her mental illnesses and he tells her that he's going to keep her safe and make sure she's happy: "Out where the stones lay like bones by the ocean Out where the waves crash contempt on the land Someone was trembling for fear of the tempest Somebody silently reached for their hand Said, understand that if you're cold I'll keep you warm" He still thinks she's perfect despite her mental illnesses: "And besides, there's so much beauty in a storm" he then tells her he loves her and to trust him and place all her confidence in him. But that makes her a bit unstable and she tells him that she doesn't think she can handle the heartbreak at the end. And he tells her that heartbreak isn't going to happen even with her mental handicaps. And he tells her to calm down because everything will work out in the end. But despite everything he said. She still got worse :"So come down with me to the shore And what's more, I adore you So tell me, what is there to fear You think some seraph up above is trying to rob us of our love Because the sky's not clear My dear, you know there's not Now listen to the rain upon the rooftop But the wind picked up" her mental illnesses are now "picking up storm" and she's getting worse and worse and her and the boys love is struggling through that battle and her suicidal tendencies are creeping closer in fear that she may loose him:"Out where the stones stand up like thrones beside the ocean Out where the waves make a grave of the sea The lovers struggled in the middle of the tempest" And water angrily crawled up onto the beach" He tried desperately to save her from herself. Trying to tell her he'd never leave her. But he didn't convince her enough. And she got worse and worse :"Said, hold my hand and stay with me We'll be released But the tide clung like an anchor to her feet" he tries to keep her depression at bay but he couldn't.: "And though he tried to make the water line recede" but he couldn't save her from herself and she soon became engulfed in her depression and he couldn't bring her back to mental health. "It pulled her out into the sea He could not break apart the waves to bring her safely back in" he saw her start to get better for a brief time before she sank further into depression and ended her own life.: "He watched her hand break through the surface once, Then disappear again"

So I think it's pretty obvious that the song is about how a guy is scared of a giant storm, but a girl comes along that tells him not to be afraid. They instantly fall for each other cause it calls them "lovers", but when they get to close to the shore the girl gets swept into the ocean. The guy can't save her and he watches as she drowns [Rather sad, really]. So the guy decides that he will one day join hr and be with her forever.

This is my favorite la dispute song.

But I am guessing if it is not literal, the song is about a man fearing his relationship is going to end, and his girlfriend assures him everything is fine, but then as he thought, it was not and his girlfriend leaves.

    Just an opinion.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
