Ich bin nich' verbittert
Probier' das nur aus
Jetzt nach dem Essen
Ich will eigentlich nur noch nach Haus
Sie geben nicht an
Sie lassen nur wissen
Bin ich noch ungerecht oder schon neidisch?
Es sind deine ältesten Freunde
Wohl beides
Es schimmert nur durch
Es steht in der Luft zwischen uns

Und all' diese Themen, ja das sind gute Themen
Übers Kochen und Reisen und was wir so nehmen
Bevor gleich einer sagt
So, das war's
Erhebt euer Glas
Kommt, erhebt euer Glas

Kommt sicher
Das Mitleid

Wir waren immer so stolz darauf
Dich zu kennen
Mehr Ahnung von allem
Als wir alle zusammen
Hier sagst du erst nichts
Und dann diesen kryptischen Mist

Wir haben uns entschieden
So wie die meisten
Fürs Rattenrennen
Und fürs Eigenheim leisten
Du blickst herab
Mit diesem Wissen was los ist

Dieser Abend kein Fehler
Und wenn dann nicht meiner
Ich bin kein Verräter
Und fühl' mich wie einer
Denkst du denn ernsthaft dies' Leben macht Spaß?
Erhebt euer Glas
Kommt, erhebt euer Glas

    Song Meaning

This song is about a guy in a group of friends who feels like he has lost connection to the rest because he does not have the same career and money accomplishments as the rest to brag about. After telling the rest of the group his feelings, one of the group responds by saying that he actually feels bad about his life, covering up this bad feeling with stories about traveling and cooking. Even more so, he feels bad for being called out living such a pretentious life, dismissing the other person for doing so.

The friendship in the group is a long-lasting one: "Es sind deine ältesten Freunde". They have gathered and are sitting at the table, talking and drinking after having eaten: "Jetzt nach dem Essen", "Erhebt euer Glas".

The singer of the first verse feels like he has underachieved in life compared to the other ones: "Ich komm nicht mehr mit Mit dem Leben Dem Glück".

He thinks it is sure that the rest of the group will look down on him a year from now: "Die Gewissheit In einem Jahr von hier und jetzt an Kommt sicher Das Mitleid".

He has a hard time of seeing their progressions as achievements, feeling that they only progress to have a reason to brag and wonders if he feels jealous: "Sie geben nicht an Sie lassen nur wissen Bin ich noch ungerecht oder schon neidisch?"

He uses irony to make clear that the topics the other people are talking about have no substance: "Und all' diese Themen, ja das sind gute Themen Ãœbers Kochen und Reisen und was wir so nehmen".

He also feels that this topic - him being the underachiever - has not been talked about yet but was present for some time now: "Es steht in der Luft zwischen uns".

The second part is sung by another person of the group. He states that he has not fully understood what the first person was talking about: "Hier sagst du erst nichts Und dann diesen kryptischen Mist"

He also mentions his high respect for the first person, saying that he always felt him to be the one among the group who has the most life experience. At the same time he uses past tense to mark that he just lost this respect for the other person: "Wir waren immer so stolz darauf Dich zu kennen Mehr Ahnung von allem Als wir alle zusammen" Thus, he makes clear that he will not respect advice being given by the first singer.

He says that the rest of the group consciously decided to give up leading a simple life (like the first singer, apparently) to be able to buy a home of their own: "Wir haben uns entschieden So wie die meisten Fürs Rattenrennen Und fürs Eigenheim leisten". Also, he states that he feels like being a part of a big group of people doing so, thus dismissing the decision as being a bad one: "So wie die meisten".

He also turns around the outspoken impression of the first person, saying that he feels like being looked down on. He also says that the other person gave the impression of knowing what is going on, thus defining this impression as being wrong: "Und du blickst herab Mit diesem Wissen was los ist"

He feels bad about his life: "Denkst du ernsthaft dieses Leben macht Spaß?"

He concludes his speech by wishing for a place where he can just be the way he is: "Ein Toast Auf das Leben Einen Platz Auf dem man einfach nur sein kann Wie man ist"

So in the end he admits that the first person was right about what he talked about: "Wie wir uns zeitlebens abmühen Für nichts Und gar nichts"

Still, he does not take back what he said about having lost his respect for him. It is unclear whether they will stay friends and whether the rest of the group will commit to change their lives to become happy again.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
