Thorns Lyrics

Bitter thoughts became your every waking breath
Save the night your hallow dreams revealed
The sweet release of death
In your thoughts you played a symphony of self
But your soul had bled a darker song
With close to nothing left

Oh. The deliverance of blade and flame
Your love
And greater is the blood

You'll find it in the veil of night
Where solitude is born
In the emptiness of broken flesh
At the mercy of the thorns

Every line of path
Into an empty heart
Where the words of now forgotten love
Fall silent in the dark

Sister
Don't you sleep through your own eulogy
Don't sever what you are for what you couldn't be

just found this, Demon Hunters true meaning behind the song: [In the few months before I began writing lyrics for this record, I was hearing a lot about cutting. This, for those who don’t know is the act of inflicting pain on one’s self (often times by cutting with a knife, or burning with a lighter) in order to take their mind off of some emotional pain. Although I don’t personally know anyone who has dealt with this (that I am aware of), the idea of writing a song about it was really placed on my heart. I guess I thought I might be able to speak to some young people about this particular issue.

I couldn’t help but draw a connection between someone wanting to inflict pain on themselves and Jesus having been sacrificed so that we wouldn’t need to bare the guilt of sin. My thought was that Christ had already been cut for us, so there was no need for us to inflict pain on ourselves. That work has been paid for in full by the cross.

The chorus lyrics hope that this person (represented by a young female in the song) might find this truth in her darkest of times, when she realizes that the emptiness she hoped would leave after inflicting this pain, still remains. Her flesh, broken, is emptiness. Christ’s flesh broken is mercy for us.

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. -Colossians 1: 19, 20]

the last line pretty much says it all, I think.

this song seems like someone who commited suicide because they felt they couldn't "cut it" (pardon the pun)

when in reality, "the blood" is enough deliverance from anything, and the chorus explains Jesus' actions

One of my favorite songs on the new album. :D

To me, this is about someone who spent their lives in their own fantasy world where everyone hates them because they aren't "good enough". Filled with constant depression they finally thought of committing suicide as a way to end their pain.

"Where the words of now forgotten love Fall silent in the dark" I believe this is taken as saying that she once walked with God and stuff, but now completely ignores Him. Either that or the friends around her.

At the end when he mentions "sleeping through your own eulogy" it tends to mean that everyone around her loves her and wants to reach out, but she's not paying attention to any of it and retreats to her fantasy world of bitterness and hatred. "Don't sever what you are for what you couldn't be" seems more like he's trying to tell her that she's great the way she is and shouldn't try to be something she isn't.

i think its about a suffering person but dh is reminding them that jesus suffered too. he had a crown of thorns beat into his head and he was beaten with a whip of thorns. he took all the suffering so we dont have to

the lyrics actually go "the deliverance of BLADE AND flame i think its about people who cut themselves (although ive never heard of it, also people who burn themselves) to forget about their emotional pain, "the deliverance of blade and flame" and it tells them that it is a useless thing to do because it will not help, "emptiness of broken flesh" means that no matter how much you do it, it wont fix your problems

I can't believe it! This song actually talks about emos (the whole style!) and of course inflicting pain at yourself! This is a way I used to use to encourage some emos. But there was no use! I just hope this song will affect such people and make them see that life is good! GOD SAVE US ALL!!!! :D

ok, first off, it is kinda obvious that some of you up there don't hang out with the Emo's... at all. (I mean like, almost all of my friends have at some point either cut, burn, carve, brand, pop pills, etc.) Secondly, "the emptiness of broken flesh" isn't exactly saying it's stupid, given it could be... cutting and burning are a lot less harmful than suicide, and personally i would rather a person be a lifetime cutter than suicidal. But anyway, back to the "emptiness of broken flesh" it kind of in a way describes your feeling.. it's hard to explain, but as your 'breaking' your own skin you kind of feel happy that your doing it, sad that you stoop to it, angry at the what people have done, high because you got your fix, empowered that no one can stop you, and as you do it all those feelings kind of fade into just simple peace. Emptiness. They all go away, everything goes away at that time.

So I think during the song, he is explaining that he does truly know what we are going threw and then in the chorus says that there is hope. Which is really good because with me and my friends, it you leave out the part where you explain how you know what we're feeling, we cut you off right then and there.

"Thorns" is infused with a romantic darkness on the musical side, with a firm message against suicide in the lyrics. notes Ryan Clark.

My all time favorite song by them! crashnbrn321 is right, I also found the same thing. Alot of times, at jesusfreakhideout.com you can find the meaning behind christian songs (no matter what genre) and that is where I found it.
I used to deal with depression and yeah, I was emo, but I realized the same thing that this song is saying. Jesus had already bled and died for me, so that I wouldn't have to and that I could live a life to the fullest because of Him. So yeah, these lyrics really hit home with me.

Yeah, found what crash and jesusfreak did too. This song has meant alot to me. I, unlike the band know of a lot of cutters, branders and so on, I used to be included in that group. Not necessarily emo's I might add. Anyway, this song kinda sealed it for me, it came to me when I had made the decision to stop, and undeniably spoke to me on a spirirtual level. Beyond that all I have to say is ~DEMON HUNTER IS AMAZING~

I found this, its from the writer of the song
