Fields of Mars Lyrics

In the garden where he was cast out by the lord
Flames an Omni-directional sword
For he as ever failed to gather up the fruit
And thus was banished with his loot

He cantered aimlessly through endless permutations of night
Seeking a purpose and the meaning of kin
And when it finally came to him
You could've mistook it for the meaning of sin

The women wish him well
Every time he cast off marching to hell
Now if you've never seen a terrible sight
Stroll the garden of earthly delight
Maybe we can make it right - someday
I'll see you high above the Fields of Mars
High above the Fields of Mars

He knelt down before the unholy mob - who cried
"War is god!"
Gleaming outwardly with great pride - and
Prepared to die

The women wish him well
Every time he cast off marching to hell
Now if you've never seen a terrible sight
Stroll the garden of earthly delight
Maybe we can make it right - someday
I'll see you high above the Fields of Mars
High above the Fields of Mars

Who cannot fight anymore
Will never love any less
That kid inside of murder
Must be committed

To live a life of hostility
Never asking what it means
When mother nation
Blood and religion
Sanction killing upon the Fields of Mars
High above the Fields of Mars

To those who weren't aware or didn't make the connection, Fields of Mars has significance because Mars has almost always historically been tied to the subject of war, decimation, fire and whatnot throughout many, many cultures. Mars is named for the Roman god of war.

The Field of Mars was an area in ancient rome where the army was trained, where it was mashalled for war and where returning armies would parade after triumphs

"War is god!"

the single truest cry of the song. War is god, god is war... either way it works

it's clear he's looking at Mars meaning war. So one day he'll hope that the two major themes here don't become synonymous, "High above the fields of Mars"

The first verse seems to be talking about Adam. Who, according to the Bible, was the first man on Earth. It says he was banished with his loot, as God threw him out of the Garden of Eden after eating the fruit from the Forbidden Tree. God put up a gate to lock him out of the Garden of Eden, and locked it with a flaming omnidirectional sword.

mmmmmm, i found a very special meaning in this song: aparently is talking about how humanity try to succed in a world that dont understand, and its war between knowledge and faith that man always had had... and the last part where its says :" i^ll see you high above the field of mars" means: if we make it, if we can survive, we will have to go to mars because there no posibilty to live in this planet any longer. sorry for bad inglish

I think it has to do with the misinterpretation of religion, or what it is that god wants.

"He knelt down before the unholy mob - who cried "War is god!" Gleaming outwardly with great pride - and Prepared to die"

The unholy mob, being the people that misinterpret what it is that they're supposed to do in order to worship their god. War is god, he wants us to kill, and they're prepared to die for it. This specifically makes me thing of terrorists, thought that might not be what this is about.

"And when it finally came to him You could've mistook it for the meaning of sin"

This backs it up, by saying that he found a purpose, and realized what he's supposed to do "kill". but then it mocks him bay saying you could've mistook this for the meaning of sin. Saying that, he probably misinterpreted what it was supposed to be.

Also, they think that by killing these other people they'll go to heaven, which is usually in the sky. The field of mars being the battlefield, so high above the fields of mars will be heaven.

To live a life of hostility Never asking what it means When mother nation Blood and religion Sanction killing upon the Fields of Mars High above the Fields of Mars

you're not questioning it, you're just doing what your told, because your religion says you will go to heaven so you don't question the correctness of it. meanwhile humanity "adam" has turned earth into the fields of mars.

For me, the song's about mankind's ( as a whole ) love of Earthly delights and lack of enlightenment. What follows is decadence. As SilasWolfe pointed out, the " Fields of Mars " was where ancient Roman soldiers were trained and where they celebrated after victories. Very few civilizations were as decadent as the ancient Romans or, as I believe Dr. Graffin is pointing out to us, our own Western civilization.

My point is this: Without some kind of enlightenment, man will continue stew in a sort of evolutionary stagnation. Sure man will invent new technology, but I'm referred to a quote from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty..." Billions spent on weapons technology so humans can humanely murder other humans in greater numbers "

When we get past all this, we'll be " above the Fields of Mars " meaning, to me, that we'll be past all that nonsense and be a better species for it.

That's what I think anyway.

To me, this song is all about hoping for and awaiting peace in a world that seems to worship war.

Humanity searches for purpose in life and too often the grand ideal we celebrate is war.

We decide on an enemy send our men out to fight and the women wish them luck in their horrific, bloody, terrible "purpose". And all the while the leaders in out purpose for being are held up as rightous figures and our nations, faith, and family encourage it.

Some of us look forward to the day that we will be above war, above the murder, above the "fields of mars"(fields of war).

To me this song illustrates the dichotomy of human nature. On one side the "Fields of Mars" refer to war, hate, intolerance and the like. On the other side "Fields of Mars" also refers to the knowledge and scientific achievements we have made, and have the potential to make, namely the exploration and possible colonization of mars.
