Normandy Lyrics
We drove through the misty canyons
Our destination seemed resolved
But through highbeams tragedy called
It seemed like a normal evening
We rode in silent walls between
Our wills like guillotines
I sped on mountain roads as
Your words came piercing through my chest
I'm your usual subject
I turned my head in defense
That's when I heard you crash
In siren screams like rival factions
Two stories are told
We never knew at any moment
We might just implode
They're watching you crashing into
Crashing into me
And wishing they had what we see
Had what we see
Had what we believe
We were magnetic fields when
We came together long ago
You glowed like burning halos
But we spent a lifetime on the
Beaches of Normandy in vain
What for I can't explain
I looked to you from the darkened highway
Facing you in tears
And in that moment, metal twisted
And you disappeared
They're watching you crashing into
Crashing into me
And wishing they had what we see
Had what we see
Had what we believe
A fatal evening's drive is what they always will assume
But I know better as I collide face first with you
Our destination seemed resolved
But through highbeams tragedy called
It seemed like a normal evening
We rode in silent walls between
Our wills like guillotines
I sped on mountain roads as
Your words came piercing through my chest
I'm your usual subject
I turned my head in defense
That's when I heard you crash
Two stories are told
We never knew at any moment
We might just implode
Crashing into me
And wishing they had what we see
Had what we see
Had what we believe
We came together long ago
You glowed like burning halos
But we spent a lifetime on the
Beaches of Normandy in vain
What for I can't explain
Facing you in tears
And in that moment, metal twisted
And you disappeared
Crashing into me
And wishing they had what we see
Had what we see
Had what we believe
But I know better as I collide face first with you

This is obviously about a car wreck.
that sounds right, even though he mentions the beaches of Normandy. it almost sounds like he was looking for someone to crash into or like he planned it. "A fatal evening's drive is what they will always assume; But I know better as I collide face first with you"
So many of us spend our time in wafare amongst ourselves, never realizing how short our time truly is here. What if we were to greet one another with humility? How would that change the dynamic with those who we truly care for? We don't have to be a car crash. We can spend our limited time here in unity--I remind you--if we are truly willing to let go of our pride.' - Andrew Schwab
Of course this is "obviously" about a car wreck, but Project 86 is a very symbolic and metaphoric group... They rarely write things "obviously," at least with their newer stuff. Their "My Will Be A Dead Man" song is "obviously" about an old west showdown, but digging deeper makes it clear something else is being depicted.
It's been suggested that it is more about the needless arguments Andrew Schwab (the singer) and Alex Albert (the drummer) would get in on their down time, told in the form of a car crash. Alex wound up leaving the band before this album was created.
xXx10290 has posted what Andrew Schwab posted on the album's website with the lyrics. He talks of pride, and the need for humility. Combine this with the talk of coming together like "magnetic fields" and how they "spent a lifetime on the beaches of Normandy in vain" [i.e., "spent a lifetime at war in vain"] and "what for [he] can't explain" definitely draws together this idea of two people not getting along well and that they eventually came at each other and parted from each other like a car crash.
Hence, Andrew and Alex not getting along very well.
But that is what some say. It may not be true, but it's a better explanation than it "obviously" being about a car wreck.
