Why has only one person commented on this song?! It's so beyond fabulous! The sound of it is so cool because it sounds like an old song, and he's saying that old Hollywood is over, so it ties into the theme.
PennyT, you're right it is about celebrities being restricted by their public image. The way that Hollywood works is that many homosexual actors and actresses cannot come out because their agencies feel that homophobic people would "boycott", for lack of a better term, the celebrities, which would affect the agencies, so thus they must "play it straight". Celebs who do come out are taking the huge risk of being rejected by their fans and agents, so thus many of them do not come out. So basically Rufus is saying that people are being old-fashioned and need to accept the fact that homosexuality exists in the world today.
Is this about famous people being in the closet? or at least restricted by their public image. Perhaps that's a bit literal. Nice song though.

It's so patronising when he says he is 'speaking in metaphores', we get it. He does that in another song too. And saying that hollywood is over and then having a hollywood sound to the record is a bit of a confliction.

I agree with Something Rugby, this was awesome live.
I don't know if it's specifically about gay actors and actresses... it seems to be more like a metaphor. I just love the title of it anyway, Release the Stars. It's such a great thing to say to anyone you know, don't worry, you're amazing, so release the stars!
The music ties in nice with the theme of the song as well, I think I read somewhere once that this song sounds like something Judy Garland would have sung at the end of her concerts, so that's what I always imagine when I hear it. It's just all about the old giving way to the new, and being happy and rejoicing in the new. The line "Remember that without them there would be no Paramount" is a reference to a line from Gloria Swanson's character in the movie Sunset Boulevard, about a washed up Hollywood actress "Without me there wouldn't BE a Paramount!"
