I don't know if it's specifically about gay actors and actresses... it seems to be more like a metaphor. I just love the title of it anyway, Release the Stars. It's such a great thing to say to anyone you know, don't worry, you're amazing, so release the stars!
The music ties in nice with the theme of the song as well, I think I read somewhere once that this song sounds like something Judy Garland would have sung at the end of her concerts, so that's what I always imagine when I hear it. It's just all about the old giving way to the new, and being happy and rejoicing in the new.
The line "Remember that without them there would be no Paramount" is a reference to a line from Gloria Swanson's character in the movie Sunset Boulevard, about a washed up Hollywood actress "Without me there wouldn't BE a Paramount!"
