Hunting for Witches Lyrics
On the roof of my house
With a shotgun
And a six pack of beers, six pack of beers, six pack of beers.
As bombs explode on the 30 bus,
Kill your middle class indecision,
Now is not the time for liberal thought,
I go hunting for witches
Heads are going to roll
I go hunting for
Now its terror
Airplanes crash into towers
Taking our women and taking our jobs,
The reasonable fool is being drowned out
By the non-stop baying, baying, baying for blood
I go hunting for witches
Heads are going to roll
I go hunting for
I watched TV and it formed me
I was an ordinary man with ordinary desires
There must be accountability
Fear will keep us all in place
I go hunting for witches
Heads are going to
I go hunting for
I watched TV and it formed me
I was an ordinary man with ordinary desires
There must be accountability
Fear will keep us all in place

Obviously, this is a reference to the July 7th, 2005 bombings in in London, and about the whole 'war on terror' and how irrational it is, similar to the witch hunts in the middle ages. It mentions the Daily Mail (tabloid) and television which is probably a reference to propaganda spread by the media and government. That's my take on it, I guess.

This is not about terrorist attacks or the war on terror at all. Its about the media witch hunt which has followed it, and the way that the government is using it to keep people in line - hence the line Desperate and misinformed Fear will keep us all in place After 7/7, the government passed a set of ridiculous set of 'anti terror' laws that in truth were just violations of freedom of speech, but coz the nation was in panic, everyone overlooked them. the line about middle class indecision is brilliant as well - i talked to friends before 7/7 and everyones happy to critisize the government, critisize the war on terror, and all of a sudden afterwards everyone just has a go at you if you even suggest all may not be as it seems. i personally believe that the government had a hand in this terrorist atrocity because from it they have simply achieved so much - theyve got people on their side, theyve got a scapegoat, theyve taken away civil liberties. and distracted from the atrocities in iraq as well. this is a brilliant song, its great that a band as prominent as bloc party have come out with it

You guys are so American and get so confused by his accent. The correct line is "All reasonable THOUGHT is being drowned out by the non-stop baying, baying, baying for blood".
How can "reasonable fool" even make sense? It's an oxymoron.

Also, he's saying "I was an ordinary man", not "want"

Oh you're all crazy :p
I know some of their lyrics are hard to understand because of Kele's intonation and emphasis. But come on...
"Watch TV with a formed meal" and "I'm going to Rome" ???
No, no, no. It's "I watch TV, it informed me" and "Heads are going to roll"
People are so silly.
Clearly this is about Iraq and the war. Referring to the Middle Ages when out of fear innocents were persecuted and put to death as 'witches' much today like the war in Iraq, everyone is scared so we go looking for a scapegoat.
I think the lines "Desperate and misinformed Fear will keep us all in place " are a perfect representation of what's going on in our world today.
No one truly knows what's going on and we blindly accept what our governments tell us (Weapons of Mass Destruction that were NEVER there) and have fear instilled in us by our media.
This song is definitely about the LONDON bombings, not Iraq...

"Hunting for Witches" lyrics were influenced by the terrorist attacks on London's transportation system in July 2005, the September 11 attacks in the United States, and the media's reaction to the attacks. It also touches upon the amount of control the media has over modern society. Frontman Kele Okereke stated in an interview:[1]

The 30 bus in Hackney, which is just around the corner from where I live, was blown up. [That song was] written when I was just observing the reactions of the mainstream press in [the UK] and I was just amazed at how easy it'd been to whip them up into a fury. ... I guess the point about the song for me is post-September 11th, the media has really traded on fear and the use of fear in controlling people.

"Thought it was about the war on terror as well. There are some references to 9/11 and the London bombings. I thinkt the title warns us, since hunting for witches is not a very sensible thing to do. So we have to think about who we hunt down and why."
Bang on. A vaguely funny but also rather worrying story to support this idea- in the wake of a huge media campaign surrounding paedophilia, the home of a paedicatrian was attacked by people who didn't understand the difference. Moral-when the tabloids whip people up into a frenzy, it can lead to all kinds of bizarre and largely unjustified examples panic behaviour, like the "people sitting on the roofs of their houses drinking and taking potshots" image from the song's first verse. We should think more carefully about who the enemy is and why we see them that way before we start making the heads roll.

This song really seems a little dissilusioned, or at least sends two different messages, whether it does that on purpose or not, im not sure. The whole " bombs explode on the 30 bus" and "airplanes crash into towers" bring up the ugly fact that Islam provokes violence and and instills a desire to control in uts followers; ruling through fear is a very common thing in Islamic societies "fear will keep us all in place". So in this sense he would be right in pointing out the evils of Islam, and based on the tune, it seems that would be the message he is trying to send. On the other hand, this could be your typical liberal load of crap wherein, although Muslims continue to attempt to rule the world through terror, we as "open minded/civil" human beings should accept Islam as a good thing and that we should stop speaking against it because it really is a "peaceful religion". Well big news-its not a peaceful religion, so in this sense its incorrect.
perhaps a little research will help to clear up your misunderstanding about a society that you've only heard about through the biased filter of media.

Hazeezah is right in saying media is biased. It is extremely LIBERAL.

And as for "only hearing" about this society through "biased filter": i spent 14 years in a Muslim nation. I know what i am talking about.

For me, I take most of the truth of the song to be in the line:
"Desperate and misinformed Fear will keep us all in place"
It's about how the Government and the media use fear-mongery to control us. Keeping us up to date with the bad news to keep us fearful and how the public react to it. The hunting for witches is merely a metaphor, for we know witches don't exist and to believe so would be irrational. It's saying that terrorism is few and far between.
It's true as well, McDonalds and Tesco are certainly a greater threat to humanity.
Too right. Terrorists are no threat to the average man, they might as well be witches. It's just something they can make us focus on, while they fuck up everything around us.

The media is most peoples only source of information and that's what they use to keep us spellbound and tell us who to hate.

"I'm sitting, on the roof of my house With a shotgun And a six pack of beers, six pack of beers, six pack of beers. The news copter says the enemys among us, As bombs explode on the 30 bus, Kill your middle class indecision, Now is not the time for a liberal thought,
So I go hunting for witches I go hunting for witches I'm going to Roam I go hunting for..
90's,Optimistic as a teen. Now its terror all things crash into town, into town, into town.
The Daily Mail says the enemys among us, Taking our women and taking our jobs, Reasonable thought is being drained by the non-stop fame Fame to go
So I'll go hunting for witches I go hunting for witches I'm going to Roam.. I go hunting for... I want an ordinary man with ordinary desires Watch TV with a formed meal I want an ordinary man with ordinary desires (no idea) This power has me still fooled Fear will keep us all in place
So I go hunting for witches I go hunting for witches I'm going to Roam
I want an ordinary man with ordinary desires Watches TV with a formed meal I want an ordinary man with ordinary desires (no idea)
This powered man had me still fooled Fear will keep us all in place "
i made some corrections, barely any, but you did a great job, and the line "Watch TV, with a formed meal" thats dosent seem to fit, but great job!

Ugh. First of all he isn't saying anything about a 'formed meal'. Bloc Party's lyrics are weak but not that weak. It's "I watch TV to fool me". Also- I'm about 95% sure it's "I'm going to Rome" not 'I'm going to Roam'.
But the formed meal part.. eesh.
It's "I watched TV, it informed me" And how can you say that Bloc Party's lyrics are weak? Most songs on this album have deep social, religious or political meanings. None of this Boy & Girl rubbish which is what predominantly floods the music industry of today.

I agree, this album is a work of art lyrically! No romantic shit like absolutely everyone else(slight exageration)! And to further my point you look like an idiot now for trying to make someone else look like an idiot but getting it wrong! "I'm going to roam"!?! does "heads are going to roll" not make a little more sense!?
