The Sharpest Lives

I think this song is about the part of "the patients" life when he was a 'player' and had a string of meaningless relationships, and he fancied one girl, but she hates him because he was addicted to alcohol and drugs. he's trying to change, but it's too tempting and he keeps having drinks. I don't think it is about romeo and juliet specifically, the story of "romeo & juliet" just has some relevance to the story in this song, which i'll explain later. Oh and when he says "so why don't you blow me, a kiss before she goes" i'm pretty sure it just means literally blow him a kiss, not blow him...a kiss. the only reason he pauses is because it goes with the tune to the music, he does it all the way through...:)

"If I crash on the couch, can I sleep in my clothes" as appose to him sleeping in a bed and having to take off his clothes...for obvious reasons...XD he's saying he's tired of all the one night stands. "Cause I spent the night dancing, I'm drunk I suppose" haha he's saying he's been drinking...obv XD "If it looks like I'm laughing I'm really just asking to leave this alone" he's saying that when his friends or whatever talk to him about his unhealthy habits, he puts on a mask of happiness and laughs, but inside he's suffering but he doesn't want to talk about it. "You're in time for the show" he's saying that the girl he fancies is in time to see the show of him getting drunk. "You're the one that I need, I'm the one that you loath You can watch me corrode like a beast in repose Cause i love all the poison" he's saying that he likes her, but she doesn't like him because he 'loves all the poison' meaning all the drugs and alcohol and it's slowly destroying him. "away with the boys in the band" he's saying he doesn't care what she thinks about him, even though he loves her, or he cant change so just play the music and let him get back to his dancing and alcohol. "I've really been on a bender and it shows" he's saying that he's really taken a bad turn in trying to stop drinking and taking drugs, and it shows in his behavior and he's kind of become an asshole. "So why don't you blow me a kiss before she goes" he's saying that he's still being an ass and he wants one of his one night stands to blow him a kiss to try and make the girl he loves jealous before she leaves the nightclub. "Give me a shot to remember and you can take all the pain away from me" he's saying give he a really strong drink to take away all the pain of not being able to have the girl he loves. "one kiss and i will surrender" he's saying if he has one drink, he'll give up trying to stop and 'surrender' to the temptations. "the sharpest lives are deadliest to lead" sharpest meaning strongest meaning drinks. he's saying that people who drink alot lead the deadliest lives. "a light to burn all the empires so bright the sun is ashamed to rise and be" he's saying that he wants a drink so amazing it outshines the sun and 'burns all the empires'. he's also saying that the sun is ashamed to take away the night and stop the partying. "in love with all of these vampires" he's saying that everyone there is vampires, in the sense that they stay up partying all night and sleep all day from hangovers, and he loves all of them. "so you can leave like the sane abandoned me" he's saying that the girl he loves is going to leave, like his sanity, because he's so drunk and drugged that all thoughts of stopping have left him. "There's a place in the dark where the animals go You can take off your skin in the cannibal glow" he's saying that in the back, you can take off your mask and just be yourself. cannibal glow as in people that eat each-other, but in this sense i think that he's talking about everyone kissing touching each-other... "Juliet loves the beat and the lust it commands Drop the dagger and lather the blood on your hands, romeo" well if you know the story of "romeo & juliet" it is basically romeo's fault for juliet's death...he doesnt actually kill her but it is his fault... the patient is telling romeo to put down the knife (as in metaphorically he kills juliet), because juliet is in love with the partying, he's saying that the damage has already been done and romeo doesn't need to kill juliet because she's killing herself (lather the blood on you hands romeo) as in the bloods already there...if that makes sense...

this is just the impression i got from the song...it's probably wrong XD

This is, to me, a flashback for The Patient, and he's thinking about the first time he'd come face-to-face with death, and it was in the form of someone close, possibly a friend or a lover or something of that sort.

For me, songs like this, Mama, Teenagers, Sleep, and to some extent, Disenchanted, show that The Patient is not a character one loves, it's a character one loves to hate. It's hard to figure out which you want to do, feel sympathy for the death of a young man, or the happiness that the monster is dead. But this is all just my opinion.

This is such a catchy song. It's really fucking good.

Again I think this is about a destructive relationship .. ummhh maybe because I'm in one lol. I love the beginning and verses, but the chorus is meh. It is indeed Give me a shot to remember, like saying goodbye its hard but I will enjoy the pain .

i see a multilayered, three fold meaning here.

1-gerard's alcahol abuse is at the core of this song, and the entire first verse and chorus heaviuly supports that imo. thats actually what the song is about, imo. Gerards own "sickness", with minor refferences to it's prominance within the band dynamic. he talks abut being in love with vampires, the very things that would such the life from him. thats a raor sharp double edged sword.

the second layer of meaning though... thats the patient, and his own sickness that rules his life. "shot", well, give me some drugs to numb the pain. it also serves as a nice refference in the context of "how i disapear"--he is losing the woman he loves during all of this. so, blow me a kiss before she leaves-"let me get fucked up before she leaves, cause i cant handle it otherwise"

i dunno, i cant get teh rest thuogh.. the animal/cannibal line is awesome but i cant figure that out-thats some billy corgan imagery right there, and that shit can be hard to decipher.

i love the part: "juliet loves the beat and the lust it commands drop the dagger and lather the blood on your hands romeo" this is the kind of song i put on repeat and listen to it a million times.

...The entire album is a concept one--meaning each song has something to do with a STORY. The band has said multiple times that this album revolves around one character--The Patient. The Black Parade is carrying The Patient to his death, and on the way, they are showing what his life was like.

This song is about The Patient, NOT the band. This is how The Patient lived--getting drunk, picking up on women, overall living a very unsubstantial lifestyle, where it's completely obvious he's just trying to die.

@jopageri i'm glad that i'm not the only one who felt that the song had homoerotic undertones. i didn't even catch the 'the boys in the band' reference! just something about 'if i crash on the couch can i sleep in my clothes?' makes it sound like he's speaking to a guy and i hear the rest of the song addressed to him, haha. anyway i'm not saying it's a song about 'being' gay... to me it's about those awkward moments when you're super drunk and depressed and you're trying to express all the desperation you feel about everything by, uh, trying to hook up with the most unlikely person ever (come on, it's happened to you!). who in this case seems to be the best friend, who is a dude. WHOOPS LOL.

I love the beginning of this song, it's so simple, fast moving, and catchy. This is also seems like one of the darkest songs on the album
