Hello from Eau Claire Lyrics

i know it's dumb to say
that you are on my mind
i know it's stupid to dream
that you might think of me as a man

i can loose my own tie knot
i can button up my own pants
i can buy my own cigarettes
i can pluck my own moustache

i read it's lame to wish
that you won't walk out on me
but i'm not embarassed to sing
plainly the words 'love' and your name

i can pay all my own bills
i can unroll my own tights
i can untuck all i have to untuck
i can weep through my own midnights

i can loose my own tie knot
i can button up my own pants
i can buy my own cigarettes
i can pluck my own moustache

i can pay all my own debts
i can rip off my own tights
i can humiliate myself to your face
i can weep through my own midnights

i think it is sexually ambiguous. i dont know that it is fair to say definitively that form the perspective of a man, it could be from the perspective of a woman, easily.

i think it is about aloneness versus independence.

I really love the way that this song sounds. I've only heard it live, but it reminds me of a Harmony Korine film, just in its structure and the way it moves and the tones and sounds in it, and I'm huge Korine fan. It's obviously about a boy whose confronting his father, though. The lines, "I can rip off my own tights, I can humiliate myself to your face, I can weep through my own midnights" are just incredibly affecting for me for some reason. Also, Caralee sings it, which, even though I love Jamie, was a great move for this particular song. I really think they should start singing together, though... wonder why they never do that.

I agree, hearing them sing together would be wonderful.

After hearing this, I thought it was about about a young man who is trying to assure himself that everything is going to be fine as his lover leaves him for good. Also, it appears that the young man dresses as a woman. It sounds like the lover did everything for this man but it started to come apart when the man said "I love you" to the lover. Also, I get the feeling that the young man didn't want to live as woman anymore and that upset the lover as well.

these lines fucking ache.

It's about rape, and being harrassed, where this guy is trying to do all of this stuff for some woman, and she's had enough of it, and so finally he just takes her, which is where the tucking and buttoning comes in, but she is still conflicted about leaving him and so they stay together even though it absolutely kills them.

i think it's about a lesbian who had a girlfriend, this girlfriend thinks that being lesbian is wrong and then she leave her for a man, so she sings to her to tell that she can do wahtever a man can do and that she is not embarassed of their love

i really like reading the fan's interpretations to this song.

I think it's about a girl who, thoughout her entire life, has been a victim of rampant sexism. She's asserting herself as just as good as a male, but what's happened to her makes her unassured and depressed.

I think it's clearly about a transgender girl who's hopelessly in love with a straight girl who's her friend. She's saying how it's futile to wish the girl could think of her as a man. Also, at the end, she's recognizing she will confront the girl about this, and "humiliate" herself.
