"This song is titled after my ex-girlfriend’s Friendster password. I stumbled upon it, but I didn't tell her I knew it until we were on ecstasy in a hotel room. First, let me explain that telling someone personal shit that could ruin your relationship is a BAD idea if you’ve taken mood-altering drugs. Of course she had a right to know that I was logging into her Friendster (I’m such a bastard), but telling her on drugs when she was dressed up like a school teacher in pigtails was just plain dumb. "Aubergine” is about the ugly truth about Portland and the girl I couldn’t get it right with. I know I have hurt some really special people in my life and I’ve found that the only way to truly apologize is to get my shit together. Some people who have seen me at my worst don’t want me in their lives anymore. They stopped trusting me and I had to decide if I really trust myself. The answer was scary. I needed to move to Philadelphia and walk the streets in the snow for a few months before I could begin to understand what my life had become."
