I've spent my last nights strung up and pulled tight,
Holding out sleeping proud.
An answer comes without a please.
Do what you want.

I wonder why I'm so caught off guard when we kiss.
I'd rather live my life in regret then do this.
What happened to the love we both knew, we both chased?
Hanging on a cigarette, you need me, you'll burn me
You'll burn me.

Hushed with a finger,
don't say you'll never when you might
Oh, just another time
This poison comes instruction free.
Do what you want, But I'm drinking.

I wonder why I'm so caught off guard when we kiss.
I'd rather live my life in regret then do this.
What happened to the love we both knew, we both chased?
Hanging on a cigarette, you need me, you'll burn me
You'll burn me.

Right, right better next time
Stay on my side tonight, ohhh ohh ohh...

I wonder why I'm so caught off guard when we kiss.
I'd rather live my life in regret then do this.
What happened to the love we both knew, we both chased?
Hanging on a cigarette, you need me, you'll burn me
You'll burn me.

Let me first say I think our guy has very deep feelings for this girl, but she doesn’t reciprocate. This song also touches on themes of addiction, dependence, regret, hurt and ‘being used’

The girl is using him: maybe as a rebound after a messy break-up, or just for sex, because she knows she can. “Like a cigarette,” she needs him, but will burn him – burn in this sense implying ‘dump.’

He can’t resist, he gives in – ‘do what you want’ – partly cause he’s so attracted to her, partly cause he’s dependent (she’s like a drug; he’s ‘drinking’), but also because, on some weird level, he wants to make her feel better.

But he’s caught off-guard everytime because it’s so intense (from his point of view). He really wants her badly, but for more than just sex. He regrets the flings and always will but keeps doing it; it’s his drug. It’s bad for him (poison) and he knows it; it messes with his feelings and stops him from getting over her.

Still, he keeps giving in, with the pathetic hope it’ll mean something more next time – ‘right, right, better next time, stay on my side tonight’.

Anyone know the feeling? When you’re holding out for something you know won’t/can’t happen but you keep holding out, because wallowing in ‘what could be’ makes you feel better and is easier than facing the facts.

That’s just my reading of it guys, no doubt influenced by personal experiences.

anyone heard Sic Transit Gloria by Brand New?

completely different sound but some overlap of meaning.

defintitely pertains to his lack of trust and inability to love her the way he used to. "I wonder why I'm so caught off guard when we kiss. I'd rather live my life in regret then do this." He doesn't initiate the kiss, its not within him to do so. He'd rather be living his life without putting up with his own lack of feelings toward her than to be in the lovelost relationship. It's ending, disintegrating, and he knows it. "Do what you want, But I'm drinking." - he wants her to be happy, regardless of the affect on him. He'll drink just to get over it.

it's a pretty intense song for such a slow & mellow tempo. The drums are frigin awesome and aggressive as hell. I'll definitely buy the album because of this one song, I would buy it anyway, I'm a big fan of theirs to begin with.

I heard this song at exactly the right time. Ever get that? Something similar had happened to me the evening before I heard this song and it was unbelievable.

    Song Meaning

    Well lets see, hmmm....

I made an account jus for this song.

This girl... he loves... (duh.) he drinks, he is confused. He thinks "I know she loves me, but why?" he wonders why does she love him? Something bad has happened between them, how could she love him? (Arguments, disagreements, petty things over time? im not sure. )

He thinks "I know I love you" but "how do i do this?" "how?" I think he is begging for a sign from her. "Please tell me what I should do?"

lie lie better next time (Why are you moving on with other men, flirting with them if you love me? I think he is disappointed that she is trying to move on, but he knows deep down inside how could i blame her? I think he thinks "I want you to look for love even if its only to fill the void i left in you" He may be holding himself back... but he doesn't want to anymore.)

I think this song is about a relationship that has been through hell ,and back , yet he loves her, and she loves him. He says do what you want, I will drink. But he does not mean that!! HE DOES NOT MEAN THAT!! How could any man mean do what you want? He clearly loves her, he needs her. She needs him. Maybe she is just reserved and doesn't show it.

Regret? He doesn't want to live in regret, he is lying. He needs her. (Well would be happier with her... aka needs her.)

"For now I will drink" for now he will drink, until the time becomes right for 2 people to unite. (Or never unite...) but if they did Unite... it would be like they have been together always, even when apart, it does not matter... for love lasts even when the other has passed. (Cliche i know)

Love. Some people know what it is... some people think they know...

I am not an English major please excuse the eroors , and I am no philosopher , but please lend me your ear... this song means alot to me. If it is love, you will crawl, walk , run , and fight , you will hold a torch or gun, and when it goes off it will sound off like five thousand sirens zipping through a skyline... you will stand for her or him. Her dad will hate you, his mom will hate your or something like that... no one will want to see you together... yet you two would like nothing more.

Please get your E.S.P helmet on, use the intuition god gave you (or what have you.) Im not saying be delusional but feel the world around you.

    Fists up for love.

I think this is a new song. I heard it on MySpace and I think it's really good. It's got that classic JEW feel to it. It's pretty heartbreaking and I can see it in a movie or something, definitely.

i definately like what FANElite said but i always thought it was about one of them falling into alcholoism and it was tearing their relationship apart. "this poison comes instruction free" (which, by the way, is probably the best line they've ever come up with...i love it). "You'll burn me" Maybe hes talking about how it hurts him how shes killing herself with liquor or something like that. maybe vice versa. i dont know.

"id rather live life in regret than do this". he really wants her and knows hell regret it if he pushes her away but hed rather have his friend. either theory for me.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
