We Are To Follow Lyrics

These streets are as cold and wet
As my eyes, flesh and bones are longing home
I was taken out of context
And to think you had me not speaking for a month or two
But it’s not You I know
It’s just me waiting
Waiting for the sun to come out

We are to follow
What if I could stand still and get moved

We are to follow
We are nothing running blind
We are to follow
We are so sick of it now
We are to follow
But I’m scared to be left behind
We are to follow
Nothing now

The TV dies more and more for each day
And the beauty of your eyes (in my head)
Makes the flashing lights behind me on the wall look even more pale
Four o’clock and the sky is getting red
And here I am, just me waiting
Waiting for the sun to come out

I’m throwing myself at you
And I’m holding on for dear life
Can I scream out of tune in this choir
God help me scream

What if I would stand still and get moved
By You

That's touching on it. Basically it's about being held in the darkness while there is no light to be found. A Christian may feel like he can defeat the darkness for awhile, but then realizes that he loses more and more strength to as time goes on, and realizes he is to just wait it out and know that He is God. It's a quest to true humility and a deeper experience of God.

I know the feeling well of being left in darkness, confusion, despair and apathy. You feel like the world is moving on without you, and you can do nothing to help it. Until the sun comes out.

George MacDonald as this to say:

Troubled soul, thou are not bound to feel but thou art bound to arise. God loves thee whether thou feelest or not. Thou canst not love when thou wilt, but thou art bound to fight the hatred in thee to the last. Try not to feel good when thou art not good, but cry to Him who is good. He changes not because thou changest. Nay, He has an especial tenderness of love toward thee for that thou art in the dark and hast no light, and His heart is glad when thou doest arise and say, "I will go to my Father." . . . Fold the arms of thy faith, and wait in the quietness until light goes up in thy darkness. For the arms of thy Faith I say, but not of thy Action: bethink thee of something that thou oughtest to do, and, go to do it, if it be but the sweeping of a room, or the preparing of a meal, or a visit to a friend. Heed not thy feeling: Do thy work.

This song actually means that we are to follow society, we arent supposed to be different, we are all supposed to follow "idols". The scream out of tune in this choir is the most amzing metaphor i've ever heard talking about trying to be different and break the cycle

I've thought about the society one, but I think that it would be more about the struggles of being Christian, especially with the line "it's just me waiting for the sun to come out". I did have an idea of what I though screaming out of tune meant....but I lost it and it's hard to gather thoughts listening to Blindside.

I rememered. When he's asking if he can scream out of tune, I think that he means that he doesn't just want to mindlessly follow people into just being a normal "Christian", he wants to be different and "scream out of tune" from everyone else.

It almost sounds like he was pushed aside for saying something that someone in charge didnt like. it almost sounds like whoever herd him took what he said worng or understood but twisted it so no one would listen to what he was saying or understand what he really ment.and the begining is like he is saying that he misses home and being able to speak and now he is trying to explain that he was misunderstood. so that is leading up to him not being able to speak because someone wasnt having him speak but really he wouldnt have spoke anyways because he was mad that they didnt want to hear and so he decides that he will wait for the oportune time to speak the truth. "We are to follow" Says the one who disagrees with him "What if I could stand still and get moved" Speaker trying to ask a ground breaking question that can break the cycle.

"We are to follow We are nothing running blind We are to follow We are so sick of it now We are to follow But I?m scared to be left behind We are to follow Nothing now"

it is like he is arguing with the person telling himt hat whatthey are following is leading to nothing

the second verse is like he is saying that the information given to them is getting oldand it is doesnt mean a thing anymore because it has been used for so long and the only thing drawing people is the color of the persons eyes because the flashing lights got old and pale. so now he is still waiting for the opportune time to say or take charge or the right moment where something good is going to happen.

I?m throwing myself at you And I?m holding on for dear life Can I scream out of tune in this choir God help me scream

he sounds like he is almost a john the baptis that is going out and trying to get people to listen to what he is saying and he is not going to stop til they listen but he can't do i on his own so the God help me scream is like him saying Lord help me deliver your message and make it stick.

now the stand still and get moved part reminds me of how we are to stand still and know that he is God so that he can move us and we dont rely the words of others to move us or to encourage us but that the words of God will move us

thats all i think i am not saying this is exactly what it means but i love the fact that this song is hard to figure out and it makes you think really think lol.... disagre? okay thats fine... then you tell me different and i will concider...

I always thought he was saying "we are nothing, wrong, and blind", sort of talking about how God is all knowing/powerful and compared to him we're really not trustworthy. So "we are to follow" him, not let our "nothing, wrong, and blind" selves lead. That's just my way of thinking and everyone else is probably right though. It's a pretty small difference anyway.

This song is about how being a Christian is rough. Tragedies happen and it feels like God has left us behind, but we still keep faith and follow him...even though we have nothing left.
