The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Where have you been
I've been waiting so long
To hear from you
And all the things that we said we would do
Remains to be plans of the past
We've been, we've been too quiet for too long
Where is, where is the hope we once had
It's too late to be saved by your charm
We'll never get this right
Your words are cold
And the season is too
The comfort in your voice is gone
Don't keep in touch
I'm better off all alone
You've lost everything I loved
So is it worth this time
Am I done in your mind
Will I regret once you're gone
Why did I ever think that we would, we would be good
We've been, we've been too quiet for too long
Where is, where is the hope we once had
It's too late to be saved by your charm
We'll never get this right
All right, I'm sorry I even tried
I was a fool to have hope in you
I've been waiting so long
To hear from you
And all the things that we said we would do
Remains to be plans of the past
We've been, we've been too quiet for too long
Where is, where is the hope we once had
It's too late to be saved by your charm
We'll never get this right
Your words are cold
And the season is too
The comfort in your voice is gone
Don't keep in touch
I'm better off all alone
You've lost everything I loved
So is it worth this time
Am I done in your mind
Will I regret once you're gone
Why did I ever think that we would, we would be good
We've been, we've been too quiet for too long
Where is, where is the hope we once had
It's too late to be saved by your charm
We'll never get this right
All right, I'm sorry I even tried
I was a fool to have hope in you

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
another amazing song by these guys. i believe this song is about a relationship that just is not working. Maybe because they are silent? and the girls charm will not save him or the relationship. And the girl isn't who she used to be..."you've lost everything i loved" anyways i think this is a great song and kind of depressing at the same time.
What a lovely and depressing song. I was wondering what the title came from. Maybe he and this girl both play tennis or they met at a tennis court? Maybe he's writing it at a tennis court for some reason.
To me, it's about a girl he loved who seemed so great and such a wonderful person. As time went by all the incredible, nice things about her have been dissipating and he wonders why she has changed. Maybe she changed because she went away for a little while and then came back. They are drifting apart and it seems she feels spiteful toward him. The relationship is lost.
yea i agree with poisonhearts up there... its about this girl that just changed for whatever reason and he probably thought she was something special but he was wrong and he thinks hes a fool for believing in her... "well all right, I'm sorry I even tried... I was a fool to have hope in you"... this is a great song just like all of their other songs... these guys are great...
this song..means a lot to me. i was a fool to have hope in you. yeuh, you -__-
i
this song...is beautiful but then again all their songs are
this song to me is pretty much about a guy this loves this girl, but knows he shouldn't and is trying to convice himself that he doesn't like her, but deep down he still has feelings. he wants what they had back, but it's not possible.
the title of this song baffles me. i really want to know where the title "tennis court court soundtrack" came from.
this is the song that made me fall in love with daphne loves derby.
ahh. an oldie that i love.
i love this song. i can relate it to this situation i'm in. its like exactlyy what im going through and its so awesome.
its basically that this relationsip didnt work and they changed [you've lost everything i loved/where is the hope we once had] and i think... idk songs make so much sense when it relates to somthing you're going through.
