"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I hear the words of a thousand voices
Sinking in my head
Long time since I've seen you last and
You talk to me like this
I can't remember the last time
We talked until forever
It's far too hard
I've tried so long
Here I am with out a dollar to my name
Will you take me as I am?
I'm holding on
You couldn't find just one good reason
To take me as I am
I confess that at times I'm broken
Drifting in my head
And why can't life be a little easier on me?
It's far too hard
I've tried so long
Here I am with out a dollar to my name
Will you take me as I am?
I'm holding on
Will you take me as I am?
Sinking in my head
Long time since I've seen you last and
You talk to me like this
I can't remember the last time
We talked until forever
It's far too hard
I've tried so long
Here I am with out a dollar to my name
Will you take me as I am?
I'm holding on
You couldn't find just one good reason
To take me as I am
I confess that at times I'm broken
Drifting in my head
And why can't life be a little easier on me?
It's far too hard
I've tried so long
Here I am with out a dollar to my name
Will you take me as I am?
I'm holding on
Will you take me as I am?

excellent song, can't believe no comments yet... it's pretty self explanitory, he wants her to accept him, for him and what he is...
i love this song. vortecs10 pretty much got it, its just about the girl accepting the guy for who he is
yeah now that i think about it... "I hear the words of a thousand voices"- a guy likes a girl and he is hearing advice from many people, some will tell him be himself, some will tell him to change to make her like him... "Here I am, with out a dollar to my name"- He has no credibility in that he is not popular or well known, he is who he is, and he wants to know if this girl will like him for that. Thats my take, or maybe I just see it that way because I am in a similar situation whatever...
Hmm I agree with Joe87 with the voices part.
I think "without a dollar to my name" kinda means I'm not rich or anything, but I can love you for you kinda thing? and he's asking whether she'll love her despite this...
She'll love HIM despite this
