The Great Outdoors! Lyrics
All you lasses in Parnassus, swallowing swords
Shooting out fire at us heathen hordes
I was thinkin' something before I began
But then you done cut off both of my hands
Now I do my drinking from bamboo straws
Constantly kicking at tarantulas
What was I thinking, move to Baltimore?
Oh yeah, the great outdoors!
Jump into the water
Keel-hauled on the Constellation
Don't sell my belongings
'Cause you know that I'll be back
Remember when I told you that I was a samurai?
Well the fact of the matter is, that was a lie
There were some other things that I'd rather not recall
Y'all can blame it all on the alcohol
But you ain't got no business criticizing me
This is my house and I'll do as I please
What was I thinking, move to Baltimore?
Oh yeah, the great outdoors!
Jump into the water
Keel-hauled on the Constellation
Don't sell my belongings
'Cause you know that I'll be baaack
Move it on over and give me a slice
If you're in the market for green zucchini
Farmers' Almanac got the largest size
Winnebago woman, whatcha cookin'?
Move it on over and give me a slice
I'd be a richer man today if it weren't for physics
If I could levitate I would sell lots of tickets
And maybe do an interview with Larry King while floating
Move it on over and give me a slice
Shooting out fire at us heathen hordes
I was thinkin' something before I began
But then you done cut off both of my hands
Now I do my drinking from bamboo straws
Constantly kicking at tarantulas
What was I thinking, move to Baltimore?
Oh yeah, the great outdoors!
Keel-hauled on the Constellation
Don't sell my belongings
'Cause you know that I'll be back
Well the fact of the matter is, that was a lie

Does anyone else think this is like a continuation of the character from "A Shogun Named Marcus". The lyric that makes me think this is:
"Remember when I told you that I was a samurai? Well the fact of the matter is, that was a lie "

This song has always struck me as a skeptic's song. Like several other Clutch songs it has lyrics about those who claim to has supernatural powers and use the claims for fame and fortune. The first and second verses seems to be talking about closed minded people. The line about blaming it on the alcohol suggests to me a dismissal by those people or even an excuse for bad behavior (the kind the closed minded love to make).
I think he's admitting what's already obvious to observers: that he's a chronic shit-talker who shouldn't be taken seriously, especially while he's drunk.
Maybe there's some meaning hidden in metaphor, but it's so difficult to separate from patent absurdity that it's easy to dismiss it all as bullshit.
Parnassus is a mountain sacred to Apollo and Dionysus, home to Maenads, Muses, the Thriads, and the Oracle of Delphi. I don't know which resident lasses would be described as 'swallowing swords' and 'shooting out fire at us heathen hordes'.
