Friday Lyrics

I crashed a
learned to keep my eye on you
you always say youll lead the way, but then you never do
i slow a swerve but lost my nerve and quickly looked away
when i looked back, the day was black
then i heard you say
why is the sun high, and why does it rain
why is there danger and why is there pain
why cant the burden be carried away
and why isnt it friday today

your lack of trust is hardly just
so do as youve been told
please follow me into the sea
dont worry if its cold
i knew right then my chance again
had quickly slipped away
i crashed, i cried, i burned my eyes
ill follow anyway

why is the sea cold, why is it blue
why do i stay here, why is it you
notice the danger, dont help it anyway
why isnt it friday today

i knew right then my chance again
would quickly slip away
i crash, i cry, i burn my eyes
i still follow anyway

Amazing song!!!!!

Cover art for Friday lyrics by Phish

first off, it's "i crash, i cry, i burn but I" not "burn my eyes"

nonetheless, this is one of my favorite phish songs because it is classic Phish in that the song actually does have a meaning if you think about it. In my opinion, this is about a guy trusting a girl that he likes to lead him to better things, but she never steps up and does it. He reflects with questions that don't really seem to fit in with the rest of the song like "Why is the sea cold?" or "Why can't the burden we carry go away?" It's almost as if he's asking God all these questions as a result of this girl not wanting the same thing that he does. He always comes back to the fact that he wishes it was friday(either in a literal sense or friday in the sense of things looking hopeful and getting easier). Finally, he says that although he has crashed, cried, and burned, he will continue to seemingly blindly follow this girl.
