Funeral of Hearts Lyrics
Love's the funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The funeral of hearts,
And a plea for mercy,
When love is the gun separating me from you.
She was the sun,
Shining upon,
The tomb of your hopes, and dreams so frail.
He was the moon,
Painting you,
With its glow so vulnerable and pale.
Love's the funeral of hearts,
And an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The funeral of hearts,
And a plea for mercy,
When love is the gun separating me from you.
She was the wind,
Carrying in,
All the troubles and fears, here for years, tried to forget.
He was the fire,
Restless and wild,
And you were like a moth to that flame.
The funeral of hearts.
The heretic seal beyond divine,
Pray to God who's deaf and blind,
The last night's, the soul's on fire,
Three little words and a question why.

First... H.I.M 's so freaking great! now... i really think this song is about a third person in the relationship. I mean, he or she is in love the boy or the girl, like, really in love... but he/she is just a friend or is even meaningless. I think of this because sometimes Ville sings "He" and "She" and then "you". i think it says that the boy or the girl was everything and was perfect for the third one, but they will be never be together, because the love of the couple separate them and this is destroying the third person. Also, perhabs he/she is friends with the couple of the beloved one... and this is more heartbreaking. Cheers!

I think verses are sung by the narrator and chorus by this... 3rd person.

Plus, "A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind", this 3rd person is praying and maybe making vudu to get him/ her

Maybe its just my interpretation, because right now, I feel very much related to this song, though I think its accurate.
@lizawillkillyou Bouncing off of this one. "She" may be this person you're talking about that's only seen as a friend. And "he" is the new 'beloved one'. There is something about "her" that reminds that main character, "you", of their past and the pain and possible trauma from then. My guess is she is an old friend of the main character (I'll start using MC for short). There is a possibility that she wants to help MC by trying to get them to open up about the pain they feel ["she was the wind, carrying in/all the troubles and fears you've...

There is a possibility that she wants to help MC by trying to get them to open up about the pain they feel ["she was the wind, carrying in/all the troubles and fears you've for years tried to forget"] and try to get them to follow their old dreams that are now buried ["she was the sun shining upon/the tomb of your hopes and dreams so frail"], but MC doesn't want to relive the past. Then comes this guy that MC hasn't met before. He's reckless and exciting ["he was the fire, reckless and wild"] and MC is drawn to him and his energy "like a moth to that flame". There is a chance that this man makes them feel like a kid again ["he was the moon painting you/with it's glow so vulnerable and pale"]. There is a chance MC feels they will be better off with him because he is a new spirit that makes them feel alive and helps them forget their past. The old friend may feel hurt because she's loved and cared for MC this whole time and now she may feel MC is pushing her away because they don't want to remember the pain they felt.
I can't believe that the Funeral of Hearts doesn't have any comments yet! C'mon! What's with you people? Anyways, this is another great song, with a great video!
"she was the sun shining upon the tomb of your hopes and dreams" is implying to me that 'he' has had his hopes and dreams killed before and that 'she' is about to make it happen again, "she was the wind, carrying in all the troubles and fears you for years tried to forget" is implying he had tried to forget the troubles and fears associated with being in love, but she brought it all back. love is the funeral of hearts, because love usually ends up with a broken heart. it's yet another HIM song about the futility of life/love. love can quite often be a gun separating two people, think romeo and juliet.
THIS IS THE FIRST HIM SONG I HEARD IT WAS LIKE LIKE 4-5 YEARS AGO WHEN SOME GIRL LEFT ME I WAS ALL SAD AND THE SONG JUST MADE EVERRYTHIG BETTER SO NOW IM A LOYAL HIM FAN.
o and lucky you (drshaqqypitt) for knowing ville, he seems like such a lovely guy ^_^
I saw HIM last night at Irving Plaza, soooo amazing. Valo was saying how this is such a great song for ballroom dancing.. he was so shitfaced he forgot some lyrics, gave a girl the mic so she could finish the song, and spent the rest of the song dancing on the stage... haha so fucking good.
I dunno if I have everything right (of course), but here's my interpretation:
"She was the sun, Shining upon, The tomb of your hopes, and dreams so frail. He was the moon, Painting you, With its glow so vulnerable and pale."
-The girl re-awakened the guy's hopes and dreams that had been broken before by a past love. The guy was the only light in the girl's life, so she made him into something a little better than he was, and it was hard for him to live up to her standards.... (?)
"She was the wind, Carrying in, All the troubles and fears, here for years, tried to forget. He was the fire, Restless and wild, And you were like a moth to that flame."
-The guy had bad past experience with love, so the girl reminds him of all the bad things in the past relationship. The girl is just completely mesmerized by the guy and doesn't keep a straight head about things.
"The heretic seal beyond divine, A prayer to a God who's deaf and blind, The last rites for souls on fire, Three little words and a question why."
-They end up having troubles and become depressed and pray to God, who doesn't listen to them or help them out. They no longer understand why they love eachother.
"Love's the funeral of hearts, And an ode for cruelty, When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom, The funeral of hearts, And a plea for mercy, When love is the gun separating me from you."
-All in all, a love like this is doomed and can't hold up for too long. It only hurts in the end. Eventually, "love" becomes the only thing that puts such a huge wedge between people who say they love eachother and then have troubles like this, because once the romantic factor is gone, the relationship can no longer exist. If the words "I love you" had never been said, they probably would have gotten along fine. This is why "love is a gun separating me from you".
BTW it would be much appreciated if ppl wouldn't take up the SONG MEANING section with a bunch of bullshit and quarrels, it only takes up space and pisses people off when they read through it TRYING to find an actual interpretation of a song. And for the people who love pissing others off just for the hell of it, I have but two words for your kind: FUCK OFF.
F U!!!! this song is fucking amazing. especially the acoustic version. my favourite bit is "The heretic seal beyond divine, Pray to God who's deaf and blind, The last night's, the soul's on fire, Three little words and a question why." espically on acoustic it sounds amazing
HIM is like the best bamd ever, you dont see love and metal mixed much these days, HIMs the greatest
Well, I don't know Ville, as someone here emplied that she/he did but.. I've watched an interview, where he said that he thinks the song is a celebration to love. That he thinks funerals are supposed to be just that, celebrations to lifes passed. He said something like: "the priest allways tries to make people cry, but when my grandmother died, I could still hear the sound of her slippers on the ground, and still smell the pancakes she used to make" aso. So I don't think this is about a Bad realtionship at all. I think that with like "he was the mood, painting you with his glow so vulnerable and pale" and that stuff, he means more that all relationships has it flaws, and that even if they hurt you, you should remember like the beauty of the moonlight, the fire, the sun and the wind you know. The funeral is about remembering and honoring the times passed.
Love is about honouring and remembering the hearts, not only your own, but the person you were in love with.
sorry for the long comm.. I'm new.
