College Kids Lyrics
Someone please save us, us college kids
What my parents told me is what i did
They said go to school and be a college kid
But in the end i questioned why i did
I'm poor, I'm starving, I'm flat broke, I've got no cash to spend
Sell all my books for front row tickets to dave matthews band
My girlfriends at another school i know this year will test her
I called, found out she had 3 other boyfriends last semester
[Chorus]
And thats why i say
Oh no, not for me, not for me
Call it torture, call it university
No, arts and crafts is all i need
I'll take caligraphy and then i'll make a fake degree
80 grand later i found out taht all i had learned
Is that you should show up to take your finals and your midterms
The party scene is kinda mean, i think its sick and twisted
The navy showed up at my dorm and claimed that i enlisted
[Chorus]
Dont get excited, she'll say "no" without a doubt you see
And ive decided college girls just wont go out with me
They make me nervous and they always catch me off my guard
Like cell phone service i drop out cause college is too hard
Its time to call my father
Cause its his alma mater
Good grades arent what they seem
I think he knows the dean
Its time to call my father
Cause its his alma mater
He said hes proud of me
But college always was his dream
And i would always say its not for me
[Chorus]
Phi, beta, delta, kappa
Do waht will make you happy
Do what you feel is right
Only but one thing matters
Learn how to live your life
What my parents told me is what i did
They said go to school and be a college kid
But in the end i questioned why i did
Sell all my books for front row tickets to dave matthews band
My girlfriends at another school i know this year will test her

This song is obviously about going to college because your parents want you to, but it ends up being more than you expected.
I really like Relient K, but some of their Christian messages are flaky. For instance, that part: "Do what will make God happy Do what you feel is right Only but one thing matters Learn how to live your life." (yeah, first time he says "you happy" second time he says "God happy", listen to it and you'll see)
Anyway, feelings hold no weight. Doing what we "feel" is right only leads to trouble. That's why we have the Bible. Read this for more info: http://www.rome4christ.com/reflectn/gwcs13.html. (It's not a long read, so it won't kill you) Also, the only thing that matters is serving God... maybe he just forgot to add the extra two words "serving God"... oh well.
Even though this song is kinda mindless for RK, but I must say the verses are funny. And RK surely meant no contradictions to the Bible.
flaky, flaky, flaky? blah blah blah. Can't a christian band just joke around? It's not as if they are being serious. I hate how people are always busting on christian bands like they are supposed to be perfect. They try there best. And as for this song, it's just a joke! have a sense of humor man.
I wasn't busting on Relient K for doing a cool non-God related song. But like most Relient K songs, after all the sattire, puns, and sarcasm, they wrap it up with some serious lines. If I was getting on them for having a sense of humor I'd be commenting on songs like Mood Rings or Lion-O (both of which are awesome). I was just pointing out how those few lines in this song can mislead some people.
I agree that those few lines could mislead people... but i don't really think many people would read into it that much... dig the song. it rocks!
ya i agree w/ puma man about the misleading thing.. i can see that. i luv this song tho! its funny & kinda relaxing after all the pressure we go thru about school & college & stuff... nice to be light about it! one of their bests on the new CD!
Ya know, guys, I dont really think this was meant to be a humorous song, or I guess we can say a 'non-serious' song. I think it is about the fact that all in the world he wanted to do was play music, he somehow knew that college wasnt for him, that it was a big waste of time, but he did it anyway becuase everyone wanted him to. Thats he says 'Oh no, not for me, not for me Call it torture, call it university', I am in this exact situation. I went becuase everyone wanted me to, and it was torture, it was not where I was supposed to be, as weird as that sounds. Not that I'm knocking university or anything but like the man says, 'not for me, not for me'. :)
I'm with puddle, that no Christian is perfect (Romans 3:23) But I saw RK in consert a while ago and Matt T. said "This song isn't about not going to college, but think before spending all your parents money
ok pumaman but whats wrong with saying "do what makes God happy?" The purpose of humans in this world is to please God. Everything we do should be pleasing to Him, and that doesn't mean don't live your life it means God made you to fulfil a purpose, when you fulfil that purpose it makes Him happy, you are then doing what makes God happy.
I love this song. What I get out of it is that you shouldnt do things because other people expect you to. You shoud be doing what you know to be what God wants you to do
a great song, fully, it just really sterotypical teen poprock, i really like it
