I took my baby on a Saturday bang
Boy is that girl with you?
Yes we're one and the same
Now I believe in miracles
And a miracle has happened tonight
But, if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white
They print my message in the Saturday Sun
I had to tell them I ain't second to none
And I told about equality and it's true
Either you're wrong or you're right
But, if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white
I am tired of this devil
I am tired of this stuff
I am tired of this business
Sew when the going gets rough
I ain't scared of your brother
I ain't scared of no sheets
I ain't scared of nobody
Girl, when the going gets mean
Protection
For gangs, clubs, and nations
Causing grief in human relations
It's a turf war on a global scale
I'd rather hear both sides of the tale
See, it's not about races
Just places, faces
Where your blood comes from
Is were your space is
I've seen the bright get duller
I'm not going to spend my life being a color
Don't tell me you agree with me
When I saw you kicking dirt in my eye
But, if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white
I said if you're thinkin' of being my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white
I said if you're thinkin' of being my brother
It don't matter if you're black or white
Ooh, ooh
Yea, yea, yea now
Ooh, ooh
Yea, yea, yea now
It's black, it's white
It's tough for you to get by (yeah, yeah, yeah)
It's black, it's white
It's black, it's white
It's tough for you to get by (yeah, yeah, yeah)
It's black, it's white
Boy is that girl with you?

I have been trying to analyze the song ever since I was a kid. And I think you really understood Mike as a song writer. He is a very deep person, and a lot of what you say matches up to him very very closely. He may be black, and proud of it.. but never at the expense of a universal brotherhood...
It's hard to own up to what you have stated there, my friend. I think you really have gotten this down. But I do have a question: What does Michael mean when he says:
"They print my message in the Saturday sun. . ."
I'm kind of grasping that he means he's trying to expalin to every part of the world that color doesn't matter, but I don't know all of the facts and "Saturday sun" doesn't really make sense to me.
Anyway, great song, great review, great era, great man!
Rest in peace, Michael!
(By the way, to you haters out there, you'll probably yell at me for writing close to nothing ABOUT the song, but I just had to comment Mistvibe on their INCREDIBLE interpretation, so lay off, will ya?)
I also love the humor in these lines:
"But, if you're thinkin' 'bout my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white"
At the end of the day isn't that how it is? It's just such a lighthearted song but it still has a deep and important meaning if you think about it. That's how you educate people without them noticing.
People use the vitiligo condition against him, But truth be known, White people have this too. I had saw this white guy who had, As clear as day, A skin disorder because he had blotches all over him. The first thing that came to my mind was that it was vitiligo. I glanced at him, But I quickly looked away so that I wasn't rude. I am not cruel-hearted in the least when it comes to something physical like that. People feel bad enough without having to go out in the world and expose themselves with their condition. It is disturbing that people will tease you and call you names over something that is out of your control. Leave Michael and his skin alone. You don't know anything about crap, So f**k off. Or at least get a new damn excuse already instead of something about his vitiligo.
