From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

To me, this song speaks complete blasphemy. I used to be a big tool fan, until I heard this song. Don't get me wrong, the music is awsome, you won't find another band like tool. But being a Christian, I can't listen to a man that was created by God speak this way about his Son. I believe Maynard grew up in a Christian environment, it didn't meet his needs, so rebelion was the only way to comfort his feelings. Maynard, like others, is struggling to find some other humanistic way of dealing with the question "Who are we, and where did we come from?". I disagree with ic_assasain, Christians should not listen to this song. I would like to say this to all who is reading: If you are a Christian, really consider dropping this band from your record collection. I really bought into this stuff for a while. Beware, preachers aren't always in a pulpit, they can have a microphone and a few guitars and still get the strongest message into your head. Many speak against preaching, but have you ever attended a Tool concert. Did you ever notice, it's not like any other concert. There is an underlined message to it all ... you just have to choose to see past the obvious.
For those that think I am trying to sell Jesus, hear me out before you scoff and say I follow a "make-believe God". Is it not obvious to you that you are sold on something? Maynard has sold you his ideas, a single man, and yet so many people have bought into his way of thinking. Are you really "thinking for yourself?" Manyard has become your mortal maytyr. So don't tell me you don't follow anything, the wolf lurkes in sheeps clothing.
