Ireland Lyrics

They say mother earth is breathing
With each wave that finds the shore
Her soul rises in the evening
For to open twilight's door
Her eyes are the stars in heaven
Watching o'er us all the while
And her heart it is in Ireland
Deep within the Emerald Isle

We are forty against hundreds
In someone else's bloody war
We know not why were fighting
Or what we're dying for
They will storm us in the morning
When the sunlight turns to sky
Death is waiting for its dance now
Fate has sentenced us to die

Ireland I am coming home
I can see your rolling fields of green
And fences made of stone
I am reaching out won't you take my hand
I'm coming home Ireland

Oh the captain he lay bleeding
I can hear him calling me
These men are yours now for the leading
Show them to their destiny
As I look up all around me
I see the ragged tired and torn
I tell them to make ready
'Cause we're not waiting for the morn

Ireland I am coming home
I can see your rolling fields of green
And fences made of stone
I am reaching out won't you take my hand
I'm coming home Ireland

Now the fog is deep and heavy
As we forge the dark in fear
We can hear their horses breathing
As in silence we draw near
There are no words to be spoken
Just a look to say good-bye I draw a breath and night is broken
As I scream our battle cry

Ireland I am coming home
I can see your rolling fields of green
And fences made of stone
I am reaching out won't you take my hand
I'm coming home Ireland
Yes I am home Ireland

We were forty against hundreds

This song gives me goosebumps, I even get them just reading the lyrics. It's so sad, but at the same time makes me proud of my Irish heritage to know that people love their homeland so much they would fight for it knowing they are going to die.

I always wondered why he never made a video of this song... Can't you just see him standing on the hills in Ireland singing the chorus as the camera pans a circle around him????

Actually this song as far as I can tell is about the time of troubles in Ireland with England, mainly about what is happening right before and during the "battle" which isn't really that much of a battle considering the size of the IRA during the times I am thinking this happened. Considering when this song came out, it might be talking somewhat about Michael Collins, who was a very influential leader during alot of the oppression that dealt with the troubles and trying to be free from Englands rule. If your interested more in what I am talking about just shoot me a message and I will try to tell you what I can.

@dwarfsetsfire its about the american civil war

@dwarfsetsfire - Possibly one of the most insane meanings you could take from this song.

Michael Collins was not alive during the Troubles. Collins died in 1922, the Troubles started in the 1960s. The IRA did not fight wars in this way. The only time they took to the field as an army was when they took the GPO in Dublin. This song could not have described that fight.

I'm thinking this song has to do with the Irish that went and fought with the British in WWI and they were promised their independence if they fought. However that didn't happen.

@NGwarfare its about the american civil war

@NGwarfare - Britain did NOT promise independence for Ireland if people fought in World War 1. However, Irish people took advantage of the times to launch the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916, eventually leading to the independent Republic of Ireland being formed in 1918.
