I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. This character named Dirk Pitt is invited by a very important Rich Man to a party he is hosting because Pitt saved his life. The Rich Man doesn't think he'll come because as far as he knows, Pitt is low-cultured riff-raff who would know better than come to a black tie affair. Little does he know that Pitt is very well regarded in the US government, his father is an important senator, he is very well know and is an honest-to-goodness adventurer and hero.
When Pitt shows up in his tux, the Rich Man is very cruel and dismissive, trying to make Pitt leave. Dirk has had enough, gives a cryptic remark and leaves. The Rich Guy is happy until his guests wonder why THE Dirk Pitt left. Did Rich Guy know he was the one who had raised the wreck of the Titanic a few years ago? And found the Library of Alexandria? And the son of the Senator the Rich Guy was trying to woo? Rich guy goes white. While Pitt did dress up, the Rich Guy treated him like he had worn dirty smelly clothes and boots.
