    I think that this song is about realizing that you have a problem or issue or situation to deal with (the broken beam) and learning to cope with it (being a dolphin) when you are confronted with it. You have to be strong, but you have to be able to adapt. They're no guarantees that you'll succeed, but trying to swim is better than sinking like a stone.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s.
