Ideas As Opiates Lyrics
Say what you want
Say what you will
'Cos I find you think what makes it easier
And lies spread on lies
We don't care
Belief is our relief
We don't care
Say what you will
'Cos I find you think what makes it easier
We don't care
Belief is our relief
We don't care

Well, not to dispute a posting that's over a year old, but I don't think it's just about religion.
There are all sorts of ideas that act as opiates. Even secular beliefs can be things that placate you or sedate you and keep you from digging any deeper and looking at what's really going on around you. I think it's unfair to necessarily place the source of all blinding and dogmatic ideologies at religion's doorstep.
The song is fairly straightforward, its about religion. Tears For Fears apparently arent religious.
I always thought this song was a direct reply to the rumors Orzabel and Smith were a couple.
I don't know where I heard that but then that was almost 30 years ago. Knowing they weren't gay I just figured the rumors were torrent then and Orazabel wrote this song because of them.
In response to the above comment I NEVER ONCE thought religion was the reason. I can't figure out where he got that impression.
Whatever the reason the way they put "believe what you want, I don't care" into a meaningful yet enjoyable song is a gift.
@SmittenKat So many people still believe they are gay.

Sometimes you will tell yourself that everything is allright.
It's all about the ego. One of their best from the Hurting
I think it's basically a prespective on life that every idea is an opiate or abstraction from the nothingness from which we are trying to avoid. Roland must not think that anything in life really matters (as mentioned in "Quiet Ones") and basically everything we think and do in life is like a dream-like illusion trying to escape that reality.
I think he also wrote this when he was 18.
I like your thoughts about every idea is an opiates. It is a different phrase on a realistic view.

However, I am not familiar with the song "Quiet Ones" (I will look that up), I guess Roland used that line "Nothing really matters anyway" in another song on the Hurting, I just can't get which song exactly because I've got the album on now.

He wrote the song when he was 18! I didn't think I could be more impressed with his talent but I see I was wrong.
