I think it's basically a prespective on life that every idea is an opiate or abstraction from the nothingness from which we are trying to avoid. Roland must not think that anything in life really matters (as mentioned in "Quiet Ones") and basically everything we think and do in life is like a dream-like illusion trying to escape that reality.
