Well, not to dispute a posting that's over a year old, but I don't think it's just about religion.
There are all sorts of ideas that act as opiates. Even secular beliefs can be things that placate you or sedate you and keep you from digging any deeper and looking at what's really going on around you. I think it's unfair to necessarily place the source of all blinding and dogmatic ideologies at religion's doorstep.
