Little Sister Lyrics
Little sister come and sit beside me, beside me
And we'll play a tune on this old pianoforte
Just for a while, just for a while, just for a while
Till your hair becomes a powdered wig
And I become a total bastard
Feet that hardly reach the pedal
Sewn to a tremendous shadow
Ave, ave, history is on my side
So complain, have no shame
And remember that your brother is a boy
Though it seems the stakes contain some integrity
Me, I feel it still is based on good old intrigue
Just for a while, just for a while, just for a while
You may have to use your hips as fodder
Still putting your best foot forward
Madame didn't stack the cupboard,
Ended up like Mother Hubbard
Ave, but hey, history is still a game
So complain, have no shame
And remember that round one has just been played
And you are poised for centuries to claim
Follow examples from no longer a choice
The world be just a ball to pass or gaze upon
And one more thing
Before we go ' round again
Let's end this maze
Keep out the thread home again
Oh my little, little sister
And we'll play a tune on this old pianoforte
Just for a while, just for a while, just for a while
Till your hair becomes a powdered wig
And I become a total bastard
Feet that hardly reach the pedal
Sewn to a tremendous shadow
So complain, have no shame
And remember that your brother is a boy
Me, I feel it still is based on good old intrigue
Just for a while, just for a while, just for a while
You may have to use your hips as fodder
Still putting your best foot forward
Madame didn't stack the cupboard,

And remember that round one has just been played

It is, but what in the world does this song mean? I cant put my finger on it?
This sounds retarded but when I listen to this song I picture a young Mozart, even though he had an older sister.
"Til your hair becomes a powdered wig" relates to the 1700's hair styles. "... become a total bastard" Mozart was known to be very arrogant and obnoxious. Also, the piano sounds heavily borrowed from a Mozart piano sonata. Just my two cents!
I think the line is actually: Ave, but hey, history is still a game
I absolutely love this song. It's one of my favorites on the Want Two album. I love all that old grandeur of the 18th century and the harpsicord sounds. My mother and I listen to it all the time. And I made it my song to my little brother so instead I sing along, " Baby Brother Baby Brother Come and sit beside me, beside meee..." ^__^
I agree with spankthru that this song is steeped in Mozart references, so don't feel retarded. Also, Mozart's sister was quite a talented composer as well and since Rufus's sister is a musician as well this could have meaning in the song. Beautiful through and through. His lyrics are simply captivating!
I may be very wrong but to me this song is about the professional rivalry along with the fact that Rufus as a boy/male will get more attention, more promotion etc... Basicaly Rufus is acknowledging his sisters talent but saying that they shouldn't let rivalries get in the way of their relationship, rather accept that he will be favoured as the talent until the time that her genius is recognised.
Maybe he is saying 'so long as we know that you are as talented then lets not let it break us apart as brother and sister'
Rufus wrote this song for his real little sister. I won't repeat what's already been said but I think it's appeal lies in the nursery rhyme simplicity of the piano contrasted with fantastically funny and attached lyrics.
this may be completely wrong but in a way this song to me is all about him losing his sister. he says that she is sold to a shadow-older man. that he will get to play because according to history he doesnt have to claim a wife but she has to become someones. the line may have to use your hips as fodders is to me a sexual reference to get what you want and then still putting your best foot forward meaning but pretend your still made of sugar and spice. the mother hubbard reference saying that she didnt set up the right connections and that his sister needs to. to me it is a very complicated song with many meaning and interpretations. i adore this song.
