Cherish, cherish

So tired of broken hearts and losing at this game
Before I start this dance
I take a chance in telling you
I want more than just romance
You are my destiny, I can't let go baby can't you see
Cupid please take your aim at me

Cherish the thought
Of always having you here by my side (oh, baby, I)
Cherish the joy
You keep bringing it into my life (I'm always singing it)
Cherish your strength
You got the power to make me feel good (and baby, I)
Perish the thought
Of ever leaving, I never would

I was never satisfied with casual encounters
I can't hide my need for two hearts that bleed with burning love
That's the way it's got to be
Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet
So don't underestimate my point of view

I cherish the thought
Of always having you here by my side
Oh baby I cherish the joy
You keep bringing it into my life (I'm always singing it)
Cherish your strength
You got the power to make me feel good (and baby, I)
Perish the thought
Of ever leaving, I never would

Who? You
Can't get away, I won't let you
Who? You
I could never forget to
Cherish is the word I use to remind me of your love

You're giving it
You're giving it to me boy
You keep giving me all, all, all the joy
Give me faith
I will always cherish you

Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet
So don't underestimate my point of view

Cherish the thought
Of always having you here by my side
Oh baby I cherish the joy
You keep bringing it into my life (I'm always singing it)
Cherish the strength
You got the power to make me feel good (and baby, I)
Perish the thought
Of ever leaving, I never would

Cherish
Give me faith
Give me joy, my boy
I will always cherish you

Cherish your strength (you're givin' it, you're givin' it to me, boy)
(I could never forget to, keep giving me all your joy)

Cherish the thought (give me faith, give me joy, my boy I will always cherish you)
Cherish the joy

This song is clearly about the love she still had for her first ex-husband Sean Penn. I always find it fascinating how people call her "cold & calculated" because of her great work ethic. but she poured her heart out in many her albums Like A Prayer being perhaps the most intimate, she talks about her Take On Religion (Like A Prayer) Women's Freedom (Express Yourself) Love Gone Sour (Til Death Do us Part, Love Song) her Mother's Death (Promise to Try), The Abandonment she felt by her Father and her own Self-Harming ways (Oh Father) The Hope and the Love that is still Alive even after break-ups (Cherish) Nostalgia about her own lost Childhood (mostly due to her mother's death) (Dear Jessie) her Love/Hate relationship with her Family (Keep It together) and losing People to Aids (Spanish Eyes) People who call Madonna "cold & calculated" just have NO clue.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
