Sittin' by the fire late at night, with my friends talking about the good times
Keys were good, can't complain this time
Soaked up lots of sun down at the beach

I'm not concerned underneath the winter sky, of what lies on the other side
Knock back a few more rolling rock
I wonder if they're alcohol free?

So this Is America? Far from the sleet and misery.
Don't ruin my euphoria, seems like livin' here comes here easily
I WISH I WERE AMERICAN

Would I be a Democrat or Republican, livin large in the land of the free
Do you wish you were American? Does your blood run red white and blue?

So this Is America? Leaders of Democracy
Don't ruin my euphoria, and tell me what I do not see
So this Is America? Bless this land of the free
Don't ruin my euphoria, and tell me what I do not see
I WISH I WERE AMERICAN (ad lib a la Bob and Doug)

I always thought this song was being sarcastic. Surely it must be, coming from Canadians?

Sorry for double post. But I'm gonna have to post a third... Now I have seen the video for this song, I know for definite that they are being sarcastic. The video shows the American moon landing, and implies that it was all a hoax. From this they are also probably implying that everything else to do with America is a hoax too.

Alma Matters
Morrissey
The man has pseudo-friends who constantly criticize his actions. They moralize him, "teach" him and advise him to make a significant change in his life, because the way he is and what he does is not what they say it should be. They may find his life lame or immoral. They hold themselves up as role models. The man replies that he will make his own choices and decisions and he does not agree to unconditionally make himself under the influence of questionable quality advice. He justifies this by saying that there is always someone for whom he will be important, no matter what he does and no matter what he is. Although it is not said directly, I read it as meaning that he will always be important to himself in every way and he will always have his own support. "Everyone is different and maybe that's a good thing, but you exceeded that mark 1000 times" - I remember very well how sad the words I once heard (from my peers and it was in negative context) at school made me feel.
