Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks Lyrics 6 years ago
I don't quite think the song is about death so much as it's about the loss of sanity. The song is reminiscent of old gothic novels like "Rebecca." Essentially, I think that the woman is having some kind of schizophrenic episode in this isolated house and the husband has been trying to reach her, but she can no longer connect with him "All that's left is the ghost of you." He's a ghost to her, she can't really interact with him anymore, or the rest of the world for that matter. The song references several hallucinations that confirm this theory and suggests that the woman may be prone to having a kind of advanced inner monologue.

Steely Dan – Black Friday Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is told from the perspective of either the leader of (or at least a member of) a suicide cult. There are several references to suicide by jumping off of high places, especially in the line "feed all the kangaroos." This may allude to the cult leader feeding suicidal people with their dogma. The leader intends to set up a mass suicide after having all the cult members leave everything they have to him and then fleeing before they realize that he isn't joining them in death. It is most likely told from the perspective of the cult's leader, but may also be told from the perspective of a clever member who intends to flee death and collect the leftover belongings of those who die before leaving.

Leonard Cohen – Diamonds in the Mine Lyrics 6 years ago
I think there are definitely some references to the Manson family thrown in here. He references them again in the equally bleak song "The Future." The last verse here is really the tell as it describes the Tate-LaBianca killings.

Steely Dan – Babylon Sisters Lyrics 6 years ago
I think people who assume this is about pedophilia are right, but I think that there's more to it. The Babylon Sisters in this case are a group of underage transvestite prostitutes with whom the narrator has frequent trysts. At the time of the song, he has taken one of them away to a motel across the bay for the night, despite his friends asking him not too. I know the implication of transvestitism is probably odd, but consider it, the last verse goes: "My friends say no, don't go for that cotton candy, the kid will live and learn as he watches his bridges burn." They say HE to describe the lover, indicating transvestitism. Moreover, the cotton candy is meant to indicate the underage part. So yeah. It's a song about underage transvestite prostitutes.

Steely Dan – Doctor Wu Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about a guy trying to get in touch with his drug dealer. The narrator mentions that "Katy tried, I was halfway crucified." Katy, in this case, is a drug that almost killed him (most likely heroin.) Dr. Wu is the nickname of the the narrator's dealer, but at the time of the song, Dr. Wu is having a crisis of conscience and is refusing to sell the guy any more smack for fear it will kill him, while the guy pleads with him.

Fleetwood Mac – Peacekeeper Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is according to Buckingham about the use of propaganda, and yet there's also something in it that really seems to reflect nuclear war. It's essentially about a nuclear holocaust that destroys the world "everyone will suffer the fire we've made." He seems also to point to the irresponsible people in command that will destroy our world: "only creatures who are on their way ever poison their own well." Ultimately, the song is Buckingham protesting the Iraq war, and is the closest thing to a Fleetwood Mac anti-war song.

Fleetwood Mac – Night Watch Lyrics 6 years ago
The song seems to put Bob Welch in an almost Ingmar Bergman-esque conversation with God, trying to rationalize his own depression.

Fleetwood Mac – Nights In Estoril Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about a love from a long time ago. A lot of the album Time, feature songs in which band members like Christine McVie and Mick Fleetwood reflect on the band's history. This one seems to reflect the marriage and eventual divorce of the McVies.

Chad Vangaalen – Molten Light Lyrics 6 years ago
I think the song's really simple and really brutal, with Van Gaalen using euphemisms, suggestions and nice vocals to distract from what's going on. Two brothers basically gang rape and then try and murder a woman, leaving her for dead and trying to burn her body with gasoline (the eponymous molten light.) But she doesn't die and promises to kill them. They run to confess their sins but the priest is so mortified that he states that he won't offer them sanctuary and that she will kill them if she wants to. Finally, the woman reaches their house, and burns it to the ground, with them inside, watching their bodies burn as she takes satisfaction in her revenge.

Incidentally, if you look online, there's a video for this (not the Van Gaalen one) that shows that this song syncs up really nicely with Kill Bill.

The Velvet Underground – After Hours Lyrics 6 years ago
I do get some possible vibes in this song about suicide, but mostly I think it's just a desperate and lonely woman looking for the one and knowing that this guy she really likes is about to walk out of her life just like everybody else. He only liked her for the sex and now that it's done, he's going to leave. She wants him to come back to bed, promising that if he'll come back to her, they can just go back in between the sheets.

It's about the feelings of hollowness felt by an aspiring celebrity, who is haunted by the memories of her abusive and possibly incestuous father.

Fleetwood Mac – Jumping at Shadows Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a song about the feelings of insignificance and regret of a perpetual loser.

Fleetwood Mac – In The Back of My Mind Lyrics 6 years ago
It's like a therapist's session. A man (Burnette) venting his thoughts (the opening) about how much he misses and obsesses over his ex to his therapist (Nicks.) In the middle, we hear the memories of the ex (McVie) which are fond, but finished. The man will always have these memories, but must learn to be on his own now.

Fleetwood Mac – I Loved Another Woman Lyrics 6 years ago
It's easy to understand. It's about a man who cheats on his girlfriend for a one night stand. The girl leaves him and the mistress doesn't want anything to do with him when she finds out.

Fleetwood Mac – Hypnotized Lyrics 6 years ago
Just like Bermuda Triangle, it's a song that's hard to explain because it's about the hard to explain. Welch writes about things which cannot be explained and how they disrupt our life, they fascinate us, they intrigue us, but we can't seem to find them.

Fleetwood Mac – Homeward Bound Lyrics 6 years ago
It's told from the perspective of someone aging, who once had a life of excitement, but who now longs to stop stretching themself so thin and just go back home and enjoy themselves.

Fleetwood Mac – Gypsy Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about Nicks going back to her roots to rediscover inspiration. She lived like a gypsy when she was first starting out, and this brought her success, so sometimes she needs to humble herself and dig back into her past to find inspiration to go forward.

Fleetwood Mac – Got to Move Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about a man who had a certain idea of what love would be, but finds out that relationships are not as simple as he'd once thought and is unable to deal with sharing his life with another fully complete person.

Fleetwood Mac – Future Games Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a song about mauvais-fois. For those who didn't take four years of high school French, that's that feeling that you get when you're lying in bed at night and you're mind fills with all these neurotic possibilities about the ways you've screwed up in the past and the ways that you could screw up again, but ultimately, it's exciting too, because you look at all the different ways your life could go. So it's about excitement mixed with apprehension.

Fleetwood Mac – Fireflies Lyrics 6 years ago
It's beautiful, of course. My third favorite song that Stevie wrote. It's about the band trying to keep together "Do you believe in the five?" reflecting her, Buckingham, the McVies and Fleetwood. It also reflects her years with Buckingham. She references "long distance winners." "Long Distance Winner" is the name of one of the more famous songs off of the "Buckingham Nicks" album, along with "Frozen Love," "Crying in the Night" and "Crystal," which Fleetwood Mac would later redo in their "White Album."

But the song is much broader, it's about any group that's trying to keep together despite the weight of the world. It's about trying to come together and remember why they were fighting for something in the first place.

Fleetwood Mac – Everybody Finds Out Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a sort of argument between two women, a wife and a mistress, with the wife singing the neurotic chorus and the mistress singing the verses. Ultimately, the song shows the breakdown of both of them, the wife as she fears for losing her husband and the mistress as she fears for being discovered, as it sounds like she is the man's coworker, possibly even his boss.

Fleetwood Mac – Emerald Eyes Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a song about a man falling in love with a beguiling, enigmatic woman, and rather than feeling put off by her strength and mystery, he takes solace in these traits and sees her as a perfect lover.

Fleetwood Mac – Dreams Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about trying to balance your personal and professional life. It's about trying to have it all, trying to find someone who really loves them and who isn't a "player" but also about trying to achieve professional success. "Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?" It's about selling yourself short and about over commercializing. It's also worth noting that this song is maybe my favorite by this band (tied with "Storms") and the reason that FM is my all time favorite band.

Fleetwood Mac – Do You Know Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about a first love coming to an end. The narrator is a young person in love with someone older and/or more experience. For them, this is their first love and they're wondering if they can ever recreate this feeling, and if they're confident enough to try again.

Fleetwood Mac – Did You Ever Love Me Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a complete communication break down in a relationship, two people that seem to want to be together, but can't get on each other's wavelength, ultimately prompting them to wonder if it's a real feeling or just something they're trying to force.

Fleetwood Mac – Destiny Rules Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about Nicks reflecting on a lover from long ago, who she keeps seeing, who she's drawn to, whom she almost stalks, really. They both know they shouldn't be together, but it feels like the universe keeps pushing them together and so it's confusing to both of them. She tries to distract herself with the city and her career, living in post 9/11 New York (a major theme in the album, and it's notable to realize that the verse about "costal cites" is also in the song "Illume" which Nicks wrote about 9/11.) But ultimately, they keep running into each other, and there's more and more turmoil.

Fleetwood Mac – Come Lyrics 6 years ago
It's about an unhappy couple who are both cheating on each other, her with several different men and him with a young drifter who is sleeping, as the song says, in the guest room. They both hate each other, but neither has the courage to say it's over.

Fleetwood Mac – Closing My Eyes Lyrics 6 years ago
Super depressing song. It's about a man mourning a dead loved one, and taking drugs as a means of coping. The song is about him planning to commit suicide with an overdose of pills, but in the end deciding that he doesn't have the strength to go through with it, he only has the strength to keep living in this self-destructive pattern of behavior.

This song is Richard Spencer breaking the fourth wall and basically thanking Buddy Holly for being such a huge influence on his own career.

Fleetwood Mac – Bright Fire Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is very poignant (and relatable, at least for me.) It's about not letting human violence and evil (the dust and the green magnesium fire) blind you to the fact that good exists in the world, and we shouldn't give up on trying to find it, because there are little things everywhere (the roses) that remind you of it.

Fleetwood Mac – Book of Love Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is easy to understand. It's about being hurt in a relationship, and having to see the person that hurt you ever day (very subtle reference to Stevie Nicks, Lindsey, very subtle) and not being able to cope, but trying to find the strength to love again.

Fleetwood Mac – Blue Letter Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is about being dumped by someone who is searching for a much younger lover, or possibly, fame and immortality, forcing both lovers to go their own way (heh heh, sorry) and resenting each other, with Buckingham actually passive aggressively saying: "I hope you fail."

Fleetwood Mac – Blood On The Floor Lyrics 6 years ago
One of my least favorite songs, by this, my favorite band. It's not that the lyrics are bad (though they are clichéd) but Spencer's mocking Elvis impression is enough to make you sick. Anyway, the song is a murder ballad, common in folk rock. It's about a guy about to be hung for the murder of his adulterous girlfriend.

Fleetwood Mac – Bleed To Love Her Lyrics 6 years ago
Not only is this one of the more beautiful Fleetwood Mac songs (which is hard to put, given that almost all of them are exquisitely beautiful) but it's fairly easy to understand. The song is about a man falling for a femme fatale character, who enjoys pushing him around, who demands complete attention and loyalty. And he's too wrapped up in her to ever want to leave.

Fleetwood Mac – Bermuda Triangle Lyrics 6 years ago
While it's possible that the song truly is only about the Bermuda Triangle, I think that Welch, who in the tradition of Steely Dan enjoyed combining jazz melodies with poetic and cryptic lyrics, meant for it to have a deeper meaning. In this case, I think the song is about the feeling of neurosis that disrupts us whenever something new and unexplained comes into our lives, Welch makes this a feeling that we can all identify with, "they come from Mexico, it does matter where."

Fleetwood Mac – Behind The Mask Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is told from the perspective of someone encountering someone else from their past. Possibly a friend or more likely, an ex-lover. This person was a bad influence and was possibly psychologically abusive and manipulative, and even though the narrator longs to see them again, they know that the angelic appearance they put on is only a mask, they know who they really are.

Fleetwood Mac – Angel (Nicks) Lyrics 6 years ago
The first use of Nick's "ghost through a fog" line, which is used in the song "Sweet Girl" on "The Dance" and also in "Ghosts are Gone" in Nicks's own "In Your Dreams." Moreover, the song parallel's the Welsh myth of the goddess Rhiannon, who was courted by a king as she was out riding her horses, who teased him by running away from him. Yet, in the end, they did marry and had a child. The child was either kidnapped or killed as part of a plot to frame Rhiannon and she was given some bizarre punishment. But eventually, the true culprit is revealed and Rhiannon is exonerated, and takes her rightful place on the throne. I think that Nicks was using this story as a kind of parallel to her own life and her trying to overcome her own struggles.

Fleetwood Mac – Affairs Of The Heart Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a song about all the different choices we make (the references to the different sets of doors) and about all the different ways that love and relationships can go, but it ultimately takes a cynical tone, with Nicks saying that no matter what choice we make, our relationships will probably come to a crashing end, anyway, because of things like failures communicate and understand each other.

Steely Dan – Hey Nineteen Lyrics 6 years ago
I got a very dark read from this song, even for a Steely Dan song. I think it goes beyond an older man being into a young woman, I think that it's about an encounter at a bar. He's into her, she doesn't have a lot of interest in him, they don't have that much in common, so he resorts to date rape. He mentions "Cuervo gold, make tonight a wonderful evening." Possibly alluding to drugging her tequila. He also mentions: "Please take me along when you slide on down," referring to a state of unconsciousness. Again, this is just one read, and it's a pretty terrible thought, I know, but it IS a Steely Dan song, so I don't think it's necessarily too far fetched.
