Behind The Mask Lyrics

Don't you come too close to me
You're dangerous, can't you see
You can make the darkness mean more
Then it ever did
Ever did before

It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
And I recognize the face behind the mask
It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
I don't know if I want you back

You're the cool nights of the desert
And the hot kisses of the sun
Why is it that I don't belive you
When you say I'm the only one
I know I'm the lonely one

It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
And I recognize the shadows from your past
It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
Don't you know it'll never last
The face behind the mask

There will never be a second chance for you
Oh No
Not for you

It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
And I recognize the face behind the mask
It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
Don't you know it'll never last
The face behind the mask
It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
And I recognize the shadows from your past
It's a devil's disguise
Angel in black
I don't know if I want you back
I don't know if I want you back
Don't you know it'll never last
The face behind the mask

Cover art for Behind The Mask lyrics by Fleetwood Mac

This song is told from the perspective of someone encountering someone else from their past. Possibly a friend or more likely, an ex-lover. This person was a bad influence and was possibly psychologically abusive and manipulative, and even though the narrator longs to see them again, they know that the angelic appearance they put on is only a mask, they know who they really are.

My Interpretation

@adaminoacids32 Yes. In short, she's awakening or awakened to the fact she's dealing with a narcissist and she's in the process of deciding to discard them before they have an(other) opportunity to abuse and discard her.

Christine McVie likes to use old sayings in her soongs for some reason. I'd even call ither 'thing'. This seems to me to be about an attraction. Someone she's familiar with who's changed somehow, but she's not fooled. Good tune.
