The Lonely Forest – Turn Off This Song And Go Outside Lyrics 9 years ago
@[everestdesign:14054] Fuck yeah! It's about not watching life from the sidelines, becoming a part of a whole, belonging to something other than yourself, and sharing the talents we've been given, no matter how small they might seem to us. The PNW is incredible, this band is incredible, and life is incredible, so go out and enjoy it!

Very interesting take on this song. After really giving it some thought, I couldn't agree more. It seems as though the subject in the song has been trying to reproduce those dreams in which he finds this "girl of his dreams," and it helps him feel more alive. @[Jacobtwo:12449]

Foals – Give It All Lyrics 9 years ago
"Give me the shade of a thunder cloud.
Give me a good-bye said out loud.
Give me the day with no memories.
Give me it all."

This part of the song should really hit those that have ever felt the true love of a significant other, and the misery that is left behind when it's gone. The "author" is calling out to the subject for closure, for an end to the storm, if you will. When a relationship that has been so significant is wavering, we tend to find comfort, and discomfort, from the memories playing over and over in our minds, leaving us with bittersweet feelings. It's a begging for all of the bad, and the good, to be washed away and forgotten, but knowing all the while that it could never be. Amazing stuff!

Incubus – Dig Lyrics 9 years ago
Though I believe it can be seen as a member of the narrator's family, a friend, or a significant other, the significant other idea really stands out for me.

I've dealt with severe generalized anxiety disorder from a very young age, somewhere near the end of my fourteenth year (I'm now 24), so as time went on, I learned to fear nearly everything in existence, and even going out of the house became a trigger that would cause me to stick to myself and freak out. I kept a very close group of friends, whether it be due to trust or trying to get away from the negativity that a lot of people bring with them, but I never felt as though I could sit down and talk about my feelings to anyone, that is, until I met the woman that would turn that all around.

Just as stated in the song, "So when sickness turns my ego up, I know you'll act as a clever medicine," when dealing with something such as a mental health issue, it's very easy to feel trapped, and quite hopeless, as though the world is crashing down around you every day. You feel as though no one would understand, but if you have someone that truly "digs" at you, and forces you to open up in ways that you haven't been able to before, it allows us to slowly begin to see the color that has faded from years of fighting an inner battle. They allow you to open up, share their world with you, and truly bring you back up from the deepest of holes. At first, it can be difficult, and we might try to fight them off or push away, just as with all others before, but something keeps them fighting to get in, to help release us, and that's truly an incredible feeling.

To all the "diggers" out there, thank you!

Low Roar – Easy Way Out Lyrics 10 years ago
Nearly perfect, however, in both verses, instead of it being, "the mistake(s) I've made," it is, in fact, "The Mistake I've made." It doesn't seem like a huge change, but it changes the entire outcome of the song.

Instead of it now sounding as though the narrator is speaking about rough patches that he can't change in his life, it sounds as though he's overdosed on some type of drug, and he's saying it's too late. This was a mistake, but it's a mistake that I can't change, aka I took the easy way out and gave up. He's dying.

Horse Feathers – The Drought Lyrics 10 years ago
It's most definitely about a mental illness, such as depression, anxiety, or a severe bi-polar disorder, but I also think it can be thought of in another light as well.

After studying the song for quite some time, I honestly feel that it's about taking on the trials that we face in life head on, and that the narrator is saying that it has really taken a toll on him, and though everything is saying give up and turn around, it sounds as though he's still pushing on.

The biggest example is the chorus of the song, in which the song becomes upbeat, with a speedy tempo and an almost hopeful sounding tone to accompany, which makes me truly believe that the narrator, though he's singing negative lyrics, is really pushing to try and find the positive in that moment as well.

Just my two cents.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to agree with ThHeretic on this one. The more I sit and indulge in Vernon's lyrics, the more I see how many references he makes towards drugs, especially in the way that the actual music itself pans out. But, as someone mentioned earlier, it's all about the perspective of the listener. Every opinion matters here, mate.

I'd have to agree with you about "stripes on fire" being a metaphor for lies from his lover's mouth. I also feel that "these hands are tired" might be referring to how tired he is of covering his mouth instead of letting what he truly needs to say come out. Truly brilliant!

Matt Walters – I Would Die For You Lyrics 11 years ago
Matt Walters did such a fantastic job with this song. I've never heard such a haunting song that would make me only want to love someone even more, until I heard this.

"He took her in his arms
He carried her ghost
Through grey stone fields
He could feel her float."

These lines are the most powerful I've ever seen in a song, they describe the most beautiful moments of life, when one's soul finally departs from the physical body, but the narrator has loved this woman with such a fiery passion, that he can feel her soul leaving to find shelter above. I wish I could cry, because I would damn sure cry over this song. Well done, Matt.

Death Cab for Cutie – Line of Best Fit Lyrics 11 years ago
Finally, someone who truly realizes the deepness that is the "Line of Best Fit." As I've been experiencing this song in my life as a daily struggle lately, I too, find it to be more about the lack of happiness in one's life, instead of the struggles in a relationship. Somewhere along the path from childhood to adulthood, we all seem to lose faith, or hope, in the dreams that we once held so close to heart.

Owen – I Believe Lyrics 11 years ago
Though I'm not always the first one to jump to conclusions regarding religious views throughout songs, and I normally find that songwriters only use the idea of religion in their songs in order to form metaphors, I strongly feel that the artist was referring to Christianity in this song.

As to what the artist is truly referring to, I believe that at some point throughout his life, he found himself in a troubling situation, in which he would become angry at the idea of a higher being. Does this mean that it was towards a death? I'm not entirely sure, but I am definitely not canceling the possibility out.

Long story short, this song is absolutely fantastic!

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm going to have to disagree with your opinion for one reason: it doesn't seem as if the guy is truly asleep in the last verse. If she's crying out, and he's hearing everything that he's ever done wrong, there is no possible way that he could have been asleep and just woken up (as he'd still be in a state between sleep and consciousness). With that being said, I think you nailed every other bit of the song though. Well done.

First off, I'm not trying to shove anything in your face by what I'm about to tell you, but I felt that you needed to wake up and realize some very important facts. The first being this, weed is NOT addicting. Is it habit forming? Yes. Is it addictive? No. There are no addictive traits in marijuana whatsoever.

Though I feel you are far from correct with your opinion above, It's not my place to tell you how to interpret the song itself. If that is what you get out of listening to this, then more power to you, I just felt the need to give you some insight about marijuana before you go off making uneducated statements.

CocoRosie – Fairy Paradise Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm really not sure how it took me this long to figure out what the last verse meant, but here's what I've got thus far....

Vanished with all maps for motion
Upward angels last devotion
One by one escort us home

(The first three lines of the last verse were put there to symbolize the human race in its entirety being killed off).

To leave the elementals free to roam
To bathe in the last of ocean's foam
(After a nuclear explosive has done its damage, it continues to do more damage as it creates an uninhabitable area due to radiation and such (hint: elementals free to roam). Although I may be extremely off on the second line, I feel as if it may be describing a tidal wave that was brought on by the nuclear blast?)

To beach comb the nuclear debris
Our plastic toys and our metal trees

(These two lines give off a strong sense of symbolism. Plastic toys and metal trees were once used back during the age of Nuclear testing in the test sites themselves to make the housing locations look more "realistic." Beach combing the nuclear debris is pretty straight forward).

On the perfect day you'll find the breeze
Once blew the pollen the feet of bees

(I feel like they may have been describing the way it feels to die with the first line. Right before we pass on, our bodies release a chemical called DMT which actually gives off a calming sensation (this is where the "white light" that people describe when dying comes from)).

Now cry the stars when upon the earth
Their gaze might rest a nostalgic burst
A lament be heard through all the cosmos
Of the dying planet with fallen foes

(The last four lines are also pretty self-explanatory as they describe the sorrow and mourn felt from the rest of the Universe to see that Earth has fallen (lament being heard through all the cosmos)).

It's VERY possible that I'm as far from the actual meaning as can be, but for some reason I really feel like Ailuridae hit the nail on the head with his/her thoughts on the song being about the end of humanity.

A Thorn for Every Heart – Pick Up The Pieces Lyrics 12 years ago
First off, this is a truly amazing song from ATFEH and I truly enjoyed every listen. As I have experienced an exact situation in my own life, I'll go ahead and share my thoughts on what this song means to me and hope it helps for someone else as well.

The first verse starts off the song with the idea that the singer is wounded but that his wounds were self-inflicted because of a past experience or lifestyle choice. We don't see a very example of why this is the case, but whatever the cause, it seems to be holding the said person down and not allowing them to move on with their lives.

I won't touch much on the chorus as it is very self explanatory and uses the simple idea that the singer feels as if he is alone and is begging for someone to tell him that he is still alive and that things will get better.

The second main verse is when the singer is able to bring us down to his level (and mine) and explain that he has been feeling a certain darkness around him and can't seem to escape. In a situation like that, no matter how hard we may try to fight and "get up to the surface for air," it feels like the weight of our problems (whatever they may be) are pushing us back towards the deep end.

"And I swear, I swear I'll never sin again"

This "bridge" describes a feeling that hits far too close to home for me. I realized that through my own dishonesty, I was not only hurting the ones around me that I had said were my closest loved ones, but I was also hurting myself in ways that led me to almost offing myself. To finally allow myself to live a happier, more satisfactory lifestyle, I had to realize that I needed to get rid of my dishonest personality that was holding me down for so long.

A Thorn for Every Heart – Sounds and Silence Lyrics 12 years ago
How in the world have you come up with that conclusion?

"He fell and he hit the ground / Just please forgive me"

From the first quoted line alone, we can tell that he fell from some sort of height (aka suicidal jump from a ledge, bridge, or building).
Just please forgive me seems that the narrator or singer feels as if he wasn't there to help the person in the song and that maybe the said person had come to the narrator seeking help in the past.
I'm terribly sorry if you feel like i'm slapping your opinion down to the ground, but you honestly have shown no support as to how you came up with your theory of the song.

Ben Howard – Bones Lyrics 13 years ago
First, let me say how amazing this song is. I love the way Ben can put our minds through a trip with every line he writes.

I feel that in the first verse he's looking back on a memory, obviously about a previous crush or love. You can tell the feelings he has for this girl, especially by the last line, "I know you can never be alone, cause it's just the bones you're made of." It sounds like this girl might be insecure about herself so she's constantly in a relationship to try and make herself happy.

The chorus still follows that example; the girl is always acting like nothings wrong around him. Sounds like they might have been very close friends, always together and always spending time with one another. The line "like i'll be there to hold you always," it seems like she finds him to be a friend, and he's saying yeah, i'll be here for you but apparently as only a friend.

The middle verse is kinda self explanatory, so i'll skip to the last chorus which really hit me hard.

The girl obviously has some self esteem issues with being lonely so she's always with someone. But it seems like she's now forgotten about him completely, and he's giving up. She's "in love" with someone new and she's giving that person all of her.
Such a sad song, but so good.

It's about time someone realized that this song portrays an image of a friend that the speaker is trying to convince to not kill themselves. When i listen to this song, I see a movie portrayed in my head. I see Kele getting tired of the day to day routine he's in. And as he's walking through the house he sees everyone doing the same thing they do everyday, whether it be to please society, or just to "get by." Everyone these days have the same problem of getting into a routine that they consider the "norm" and don't do anything to be above the rest. They end up becoming satisfied that their life is the same boring shit day in and day out.

Armor for Sleep – Stay on the Ground Lyrics 16 years ago
Well not only does it seem to be about giving up on his ex, because the way it sounds, he hasn't given up.
He just can't get over her and it's putting him in a depression where he doesn't care about anything or anyone, including himself anymore.

Most people that end up in a state of depression, don't want to look up (holding your head up)
because they know they'll get shot down everytime. (is hard when you just want to stay on the ground)

It's pretty much saying he's not content with the way things are, but he'd rather be hurting on the "ground" than getting his hopes up and being shot down again.
