As If By Magic Lyrics
Emerging from my world
Imagine living in a box
And I won't come out
Until I've broken all the locks
Slurring all my words
Until something sticks
But in this smoky universe
My mind keeps playing tricks
And although
You're the only home I know
As if by Magic
Thoughts of you are gone
And now I'm keeping my head in the clouds
And it's not so tragic
If I don't look down
Submerging from your world
And back into my bliss
A day rolled into one
Is burning on my lips
Blurring all your words
Until they don't exist
And in a parallel universe
It's me you can't resist
And although
You're the only home I'll ever know
As if by Magic
Thoughts of you are gone
And now I'm keeping my head in the clouds
And it's not so tragic
If I don't look down
You say I"M a rose tinted lover come on
You know I'll never love another
I won't stay a lonely lover for long

it seems like she trying to say to someone that she's moving on from them and trying to forget everything thats they've said, done etc. But i also get the sense from it that maybe its a bit delusional and that she's trying to convince herself thats she's moving on, but in reality isnt
It's my favorite track off that c.d.

I agree, she is trying to get over someone she's been through a lot with. But look at it, tell me she isn't smoking green to do it... "but in this smokey universe/my mind keeps playing tricks" - she's baked! "I'm keeping my head in the clouds/but it's not so tragic if i don't look down" getting high! "a day rolled into one/is burning on my lips" smoking a joint! :)
The song is about being surprised how easy it is to move on from someone, even though you thought they meant so much to you.
Um, to the stoners above, 'keeping your head in the clouds' is an old phrase related to daydreaming, not smoking weed.. :/ I sincerely doubt they intended any of this to be drug related lol.
It's all about illusion and magic pretty much.
Elly does admit to smoking weed when she was really depressed so yeah it is about drugs, sorry.

Thanks, puddinglover. To me it is so blatantly obvious, but I guess not to everyone.

Ah, puddinglover! Thanks for that. I'm really glad she is out and proud about her habit. Smoke on, ladies! :)

I don't interpret it that way, so no, not really "blatantly obvious" at all.

The lyrics use analogies referring to Houdini/magic acts -- fact.

Even if one were to read it as being about drugs, it'd simply point out that they don't fix anything, rather entrap and delude you. :)

Anyways, no point in responding to stoners who probably call 'drugs' on any lyric with 'smoke' in them. Hahah.

Wow, Yumi, there are far too many "quotations" in that reply. Wait, how do I do it? That's so "90's"?

Please show me these 'facts' which show that the only perspective Elly could have been coming from was one of 'magic' and I'll happily concede.

'Anyways', no point in responding to the literal-minded 'moron'. Go back to listening to 'Empire of the Sun' and leave the goof bands to 'stoners' like us.

Annoying, isn't it? 'LOL'.

Yeah, it is pretty annoying when incessant drug addicts try argue my own personal interpretation of the lyrics actually. Not to mention unnecessarily pick on elements of how I type it. Seriously, GROW UP.

The facts are you need only know a little history about magic/mysticism to see she was making intentional analogies to magic act cliches... escape acts, levitation etc. Oh please, "only perspective" ? We all know they're open to interpretation, so lay off already.

What exactly is an incessant drug addict? I'm intrigued.

In regards to your interpretation of the song being correct purely due to it being a personal opinion, I wholeheartedly agree. However, a few of your words seem to contradict that fact.

You would probably like Empire of the Sun. Far too highbrow for me, of course. I wonder if Lady Gaga would be considered 'high brow'...?
Being submerged in one's own world then stumbling across someone just by chance and realizing that the world is round and that there is more then one dimension to it kinda thing...that's why. "You know I'll never love another "-:)Favorite lyric from the song.
To me this is about someone that just lives inside their head. They've been through too much and they don't want to dwell on it anymore or be in pain anymore, so they block it all out from their mind, don't let themselves think about it, and think of other things. They tell themselves they're fine, they're stable, they're moving on - but because they live inside their head, and keep everything locked up inside, their thoughts constantly changing, they get confused and never quite know how they feel, their thoughts end up contradicting each other.
I don't know if that makes sense, it's not really how I wanted it to sound. I think this is a really hard songmeaning to describe.
Oh my gosh, Lari21, I very much agree with you - I'm glad someone else has the same interpretation as I do. What's the one thing that gets man troubles out of your mind? Cone on!
It's about liking someone...and then realising you dont even like them and you just stop thinking about them, even though it felt nice to like someone in the certain time.
This song is completely referencing weed, but I do agree that is also about liking someone etc.. But the evidence is just too clear: "A day rolled into one Is burning on my lips" Definitely talking about smoking a jay or a spliff. Plus the references to keeping her head in the clouds and the line "But in this smoky universe My mind keeps playing tricks".
personally, i think this song is about liking someone a lot and then all of a sudden you're over it ("as if by magic/thoughts of you are gone"). there are some moments where she still has this yearning: ("and in a parallel universe/it's me you can't resist" and the ending part "you say i'm a rose-tinted lover, come on/you know i'll never love another/i won't stay a lonely lover for long")... i also agree with azpoo about how she's a bit delusional and that perhaps everything is in her mind (hence making up "parallel universes" and "my mind keeps playing tricks").
however there are clearly many different opinions on this song. and after all, that's what music is about--interpreting it as how YOU want to interpret it. at least, that's what it is to me.
Okay, the drug reference is not important to the interpretation of this song. It's not about getting high. It's about the struggle with the broken relationship and her trying to cope with the separation. Obviously people use drugs when emotionally upset and it usually doesn't help, just clouds the mind. The whole song is state of bravado where her confidence in her ability to carry on is so thin that all it takes is just looking down and reality destroys her.
