Bastille – Good Grief Lyrics
|
At first I thought it was about a soldier who lost a companion, because of "misfire" and "watching through my fingers" (eg. hiding in trenches?). Also the line "Sleeping in the clothes you love - it’s such a shame we had to see them burn" seemed like maybe someone died in a fire (bomb, perhaps) however, it seems more realistically to be about cremation. Amazing song. |

The Barr Brothers – Beggar In The Morning Lyrics
| 8 years ago
|
I know it's cliche, but I was thinking drug addiction. He meets someone with problems and they fall into that. Perhaps they also sell drugs to support the habit ("It makes me rich and it makes me poor"). "Belt is loose / Trigger is tight" is that he is easy on himself (belt), but tougher on others (gun). "Beggar in the morning / King at night" would be struggling to make ends meet, and then experiencing euphoria at night. Maybe that is too literal. |

Modest Mouse – Gravity Rides Everything Lyrics

People don't like aging (flesh sags) or weighing a lot, but those things happen because of gravity, without gravity you'd just float away... good can't exist without the bad, yadda yadda |

This song is brilliant. Finding peace in a destructive, violent world... or maybe it's how people ignores its problems? |

John Foxx – The Garden Lyrics
|
This song is hauntingly beautiful. Always felt it was about missing the past, fading memories, trying to hold onto them but losing them inevitably... We've been living in the past, we remember things as being more perfect than they were, kind of like a garden where it isn't nature's chaos but rather man's cultivated landscape. |

IAMX – The Stupid, The Proud Lyrics
|
Had a feeling it was about the dangers of arrogance... Then it seems to hint that society encourages arrogance (masquerading as confidence/bravery). "Exalt yourself, Do it to stay alive." Then "everything you know is not enough to survive" saying you can be intelligent but it is not as important as dedication to your beliefs no matter how ludicrous. |

Smile Empty Soul – Eraser Lyrics
|
It's a conflict, he doesn't know weather to embrace or erase the person. Maybe a family member, I'm thinking, because they are the most difficult to cut yourself off from; they're your roots, your childhood. "It feels like I'm infected by my dad's disease", his dad's "disease" could be self-destructive behaviour like running away from problems ("I'm hiding from the battles I don't want to fight") and/or clinging to those who hurt you ("feed me pain"). |

Beck – Go It Alone Lyrics
|
I think this song refers to... being close to people who you don't really like, maybe old friends you only share a time with... a friend who is becoming a negative energy, an extremely difficult person to be around... The song describes adventures in solitude. "On a makeshift road" = Dealing with his situation, getting by, because he had to to move on. You don't want to cut yourself off from an old friendship, but sometimes it's the healthiest thing to do. "Strike a match on a bathroom wall - Where my number was written" I think that symbolizes erasing the past, moving on to a new life sans this poisonous person. |

Queen – All Dead, All Dead Lyrics

This song is so underrated. I suppose the meaning is simple; Brian (?) was contemplating life/death when his cat died... Cats die, everyone and everything dies :( |

Radiohead – Gagging Order Lyrics
|
When I heard "I'm not your property" I immediately thought of a relationship with parents. How they want you to be something, they have a fantasy that you're supposed to fulfill. My mother was devastated that I wanted to change my name, but it wasn't who I was and I am my own man. Maybe then this person would be taking pills, or some sort of vice, to be able to function in society. |

TV on the Radio – Will Do Lyrics

I like the xylophone (?) at the beginning. The singer wants the person he loves to make an effort for him, anytime will do... |

Antony and the Johnsons – For Today I Am a Boy Lyrics
| 11 years ago
|
Pretty simple: Someday (sometimes) I'll have to be responsible and mature, but today (at the moment) I am free. Free from guilt, shame, anxiety and everything that comes with adult expectations. It's okay, I can relax. This is beautiful. |

Mother Mother – Sleep Awake Lyrics

This song is so dark. I think it's maybe her boyfriend asked her to kill him (due to depression/disease/something like that), and she did... |

Mother Mother – Chasing It Down Lyrics

This is a really good song, kinda obvious... singer has problems and "chases it down" to feel better. As for the "shagra" thought that was just a sample or something... -shrugs- |

Jerry Cantrell – Cut You In Lyrics
|
I think it's about being addicted or obsessed with something and spending most of your time at home because of it, a friend wants to hang out and have back how things use to be, so the addict will organize a time so they can hang out, because it's difficult for him to just stop his addiction (and be prepared for human interaction) temporarily without planning it out. Then when he is with the friend, he realizes he needs a connection to the real world, so he becomes clingy to his friend, decides to make routine phone calls, etc. "and you ain't leavin' at all". |

Alice in Chains – Dam That River Lyrics

The lyrics are difficult to pin to a concept- so I'd say they're specific to whatever the argument was. For example, "proving you're a fake" |

Alice in Chains – Hate To Feel Lyrics
|
Maybe he hated to feel, and that's why he used drugs to numb the feelings... but yeah for this line:
"Used to be curious
Now the shit's sustenance"
Feel like that means he used to have feelings (curiosity) and now his feelings ("the shit") are mainly "I need drugs". |

Alice in Chains – Brother Lyrics

|
"Frozen in the place I hide
Not afraid to paint my sky with
Some who say I've lost my mind
Brother try and hope to find"
What does "paint the sky" mean? "paint the sky with people who say I've lost my mind" Do you think it refers to ignoring them, or the opposite? Then "brother try and hope to find" is this him asking his brother to find these people, or is it asking the people to find his brother? Thoughts? |

Wintersleep – Drunk On Aluminium Lyrics
|
Is it about an addiction to self-injury? First he describes the urges to hurt himself ("I feel it crawling in"), then motivation as he does it ("make it white"). Read the words and consider it. As for "aluminium", maybe it's aluminium cans? -shrug- |

Wintersleep – Dead Letter & The Infinite Yes Lyrics

I thought this song was about feeling meaningless, thoughts of one's purpose in a population of 6 million. Confusion about life, big questions about life and death... hard to put into words... |

Bad Religion – Don't Sell Me Short Lyrics
| 12 years ago
|
"we don't need any more mountains" = I don't need to prove myself to yet another person
"And we are all too young to die" = judging someone and having a closed mind is basically killing them (when you're dead, you can't change)
basically about fast/fatalistic judgment
I can relate to this so well:
"I'm full of emotion
and stuff you can't contain
And you just want to
flush me down the drain
But you can't make me go away" |

Ladytron – Cease2xist Lyrics
|
think it's about questioning your own identity while thinking about relationships. Your lover says a lot about who you are, so if it's the "wrong" one does that mean you aren't representing yourself as who you really are? "where did you come from?" is the disassociation with your lover/yourself and the song is generally confusion |

agreed with all of the above. Love those lines.
just wanted to say about the line "so fuck you school and fuck you immigration" it's like governments make things so complicated, tedius, and fragile just for legal reasons and crap when it seems so simple.. and it pisses you off that you havta prove everything.. |

This Mortal Coil – Holocaust Lyrics

Agreed. At first it sounds like a typical depressive person, but a holocaust? Holocaust is defined as "an act of mass destruction and loss of life" ? So it makes me think of maybe someone who hurt people all their lives, and is depressed.. |
