I don't think Gnarls Barkley's "mocking" anyone. It has a real messy punk vibe to it, and is expressing the fierceness, loneliness, and feeling of displacement that many angry young men experience. Green's voice is nasally and raw, and the rhythm and arrangement is, for lack of a better word, "stomp-y." This epitomizes the whole punk genre.

Also, emo tends to be much more weepy: emo says "pity me," as opposed to punk: "life sucks, go f*ck yourself" (as this song pretty much literally says). It's true the protagonist is wallowing in self-pity, but he still reacts fiercely to his perceived wrongs (admittedly, he IS a bit passive-aggressive).

Gnarls Barkley has shown an appreciation for this before, with covering "Gone Daddy Gone" by The Violent Femmes, and this song has a "Blister in the Sun" vibe of jealousy, remorse, anger, and angst. I think they are actively trying to reconcile different genres of music (in this case, and with "Gone," punk, soul, and hip-hop) and I would be surprised if something like this didn't show up in the future from either Cee Lo or Danger Mouse (hopefully from Gnarls!)

"My backs always against the wall." Meaning, he's trying to not get stabbed in the back by his haters.

its about a breakup.

he loves his girl more than himself..but things went bad and now shes with someone else.

hes obviously in love with her and she doesnt have the same feelings back.

also when he is saying hes all alone. he obviously alienated himself from people when he was with his girl.

the first verse represents him losing his friend. He shows doesnt care about the whole situation, when in fact hes mad. The second verse is after the fact of losing his girlfriend, which also makes him pissed. But he stays with his tough mentality and says "what ever"

second the angsty teenager theory, its mocking the teenager as a brat but also somewhat sympathetic for the kid being trapped in such a depressing/angry/bad mindset

The song is about not giving a flying **** about anything anymore. The song does have an emo feel to it. The dude is trying to act like he aint phased by all the stuff that is really ticking him off e.g his girl friend(who he is still crazy over) moved on and things are looking good. A number of other problems are there, but he is still tryna pull a straight face and act like its all good... he knows he isnt really ok with this. How would you feel if somebody else was getting your ex to smile? probably wouldnt like it, but you would try to live with it even while it kills you deep inside...

Wow, this is definitely about snotty teens. I don't like the interpretation of it mocking anyone. To me, it seems more like being so frustrated with everything you just give up. That ever happen to you lot? You get so fucking fed up you just throw up your hands and laugh about it? That's kind of the feel I'm getting off this, anyway.
