I think he's describing the darkness or negativity inside of him. He feels it coming on and doesn't like it. He wants the shine of happiness.

I think it's a song about one's battle with addiction. Something they want to get rid of. It's a thing they keep resorting too because they don't know anything better. They hate it, but it's all they know, so they always end up there.
