it's to do with the melody. the lyrics are brilliant, but the notes of this song are much too painful and soul-touching, i can sing the melody alone and feel like i want to cry.
"This song is a big part of why I love Sea Change so much. Unlike in previous albums, where the lyrics were mostly nonsense" - nonsense your face, the only Beck album that has no maning in lyrics is Odelay, the rest are some of the greatest metaphors and hidden messages in music history, sad that not everybody notices that. |

this song, is soooooooo perfect. can't believe there are people who don't like it still. to me it's one of the best on The Information, though i love most of the cd equally, even though it's seen as simplistic and the kind of album with which Beck could have done better but to me.. it's amazing, totally. |

it's got a similar sound to Nick Drake hence the strings, i love both River Man and this but the mood is different.. the storyteller on RM is like this kindly and mildly smilling pal who apparently knows more than the rest, differently from the one from Beck's song who's totally lost and sad in terms of his thoughts. there was a very great comment on this website on Beck's Movie Theme, about "Beck having figured out everyting about the world and not being happy with the result", i see it so perfectly in this and other Beck songs. it's just in his voice - it can be crazy, calmly ironic but so sad and deep at times. |

i think this is just a 'for-fun' song ;) as much as i believe in the obscurity in some of DD's lyrics, this ain't the case, it's just ain't. and note that they were written by the smartest guy in the band, eh. the one obsessed with technology and Barbarella, so it makes sense. but nothing beyond that in my oppinion, and that makes it pretty clear to understand. |
