Sound of Thunder Lyrics

I've been in this grass here
For the last ten hours
My clothes are dirty but my mouth isn't dry.
How does it happen?
Does it fly through the air?
Oh, I gave up asking days away.
I gave up asking days away.

And now I'm lying here waiting for the
Sound of thunder
Waiting for the sound of thunder.

Here I am I'm a dotted line
Cut the corner stick me to your door
I'm the man who stepped off the path
And I just lie here it's what I was made for.

And now my eyes are closing
But I still feel the land
Leaning out for the touch of my hand
The world spins so fast that I might fly off
The world spins so fast that I might fly off
The world spins so fast
I might fly off

Waiting for the sound of thunder
I'm waiting for the sound of thunder
I'm waiting for the sound of thunder
I'm waiting for the sound of thunder
I'm waiting for the sound of thunder
I'm waiting for the sound of thunder
I'm waiting for the sound of thunder

I think this is about a man who is questioning his faith. "I'm the man who stepped off the path" makes me think he's saying, well, while everyone else was following the path, he got diverted and the "sound of thunder" is perhaps a sign from God.

Chic meets Sex Pistols

December 15th, 2005

Hi Katy - I was wondering which one song has the band recorded in their career that most closely matches John/Nick's original concept for the band that they should be "a cross between Chic & the Sex Pistols" ? Damian

'Sound Of Thunder' (they agree!)

their 1979 demos sound a lot more like if they were a mix between Chic and Sex Pistols, but yeah this can also approve.

Stepped off the path and the touch of my hand in the lyrics may be an allusion back to A Sound of Thunder by Bradbury, a story about a time traveler who steps of a path after going back in time with serious consequences for the future. "A touch of the hand and this burning would, on the instant, beautifully reverse itself. Eckels remembered the wording in the advertisements to the letter. Out of chars and ashes, out of dust and coals, like golden salamanders, the old years, the green years, might leap; roses sweeten the air, white hair turn Irish-black, wrinkles vanish; all, everything fly back to seed, flee death, rush down to their beginnings, suns rise in western skies and set in glorious easts, moons eat themselves opposite to the custom, all and everything cupping one in another like Chinese boxes, rabbits into hats, all and everything returning to the fresh death, the seed death, the green death, to the time before the beginning. A touch of a hand might do it, the merest touch of a hand."

That's what i think too

Although, at the time, it could not have been written for what it describes to me now: a Global Warming Activist. It writes of the person's paranoid obsession with the weather, and how conceptually, they are pulled to the spinning Earth but could be thrown off. I recall long ago Simon LeBon always hoped that his lyrics would remembered and studied as poetry. He really, in fact, wrote many music lyrics of such a metaphysical nature questioning conventional reality constructs that, like "The Sound of Thunder", have been poetic masterpieces lost in plain sight.
