Indiscipline Lyrics

I do remember one thing.
It took hours and hours but..
by the time I was done with it,
I was so involved, I didn't know what to think.
I carried it around with me for days and days..
playing little games
like not looking at it for a whole day
and then.. looking at it.
to see if I still liked it.
I did.

I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat myself when under stress.
I repeat..
The more I look at it,
the more I like it.
I do think it's good.
The fact is..
no matter how closely I study it,
no matter how I take it apart,
no matter how I break it down,
It remains consistant.
I wish you were here to see it.

I like it.

I think this song is about the youthful glee of discovering something new and being so obsessed with it that it invades your every thought.

I think Adrien is specifically talking about when his fascination for guitars started. There's a Crimson video from Japan in 1983 where they perform this song, and He picks up his guitar and stairs at it, turns in over in his hands all the while singing the lyrics. His focus is definitely on his guitar.

The lyrics were based on a letter Adrian's wife(at the time) wrote to him about a sculpture she had made.

I'll wager the song is about pornography. The word "Indiscipline" means "lack of discipline" or "bad behavior". He says, "(I was) Playing little games Like not looking at it for a whole day, and then... looking at it. To see if I still liked it. I did." Then he says, "I repeat...the more I look at it, the more I like it." Remember, the title indicates he's doing something wrong. And what is he doing? He's obsessed with looking at something, evidently something he shouldn't be looking at. That's why I think the song is about pornography. Remember, this song was written 33 years ago, when it was far less culturally acceptable to admit to liking porn than it is today. So that's my interpretation. What do you think?

Crazy, crazy song. I first heard it when I was trying to fall asleep... and awoke confused and disoriented. Pretty cool.

The first time i heard this, i was under the influence of a few small squares of paper soaked in ergot, so i thought it was about that. After i came to my senses, i thought it was about quantum mechanics/physics. I’ve head the stiry from Adrian, but i still think there is something to it. A song can be written with many shades of meaning, Dylan does it all the time.

“Indiscipline” started out as a vehicle for some pretty erratic drumming. Originally it was almost a throwaway, a drum solo with a riff hung on it. Eventually I came up with a little melody, Robert came up with a line for himself, and at that point we thought no, it’s still not enough.\n\n I knew what it needed was a vocal, but I couldn’t think of anything to sing. So I thought of doing these talk sections throughout the song. We did that the very last day of recording. I took a letter my wife had written me about a painting she had done. I just took all these lines out of context without specifically naming what the subject was, then added a few lines of my own. It’s a very undisciplined song."
