The OP is getting drunk at a party (in this case, on honey whiskey) and thinking of leaving before he tries something he regrets. Could be drugs, could be hooking up with someone he doesn't know, making a fool of himself, could be saying something he regrets. I do love the deliciousness of this line: "But if you wanna free your body tonight it's our secret, it's our secret". Saying if he does hook up/have sex with someone, it's just going to be a secret between them and he wouldn't tell anyone else. Great track! |

Oh man... this song makes me think of myself and my long-distance boyfriend (we live in separate states in Australia). I've often thought to myself, 'What if we had lived in the same state and met as kids?' etc. What would it have been like... Would I have loved you then too? And this entire verse: "Flying back where I belong on Sunday Back into your arms I'm leaving when the sun goes down I miss you Soon I'll see your face again" I can really relate to this. How many times my boyfriend and I have travelled by plane to see each other, and missing each other when we are apart. The promise of seeing their face again. I also feel the 'hold on, I won't be long, I'm coming home' reminds me of the pandemic separating people from their loved ones. The children's choir really elevates this song, too. Overall a fantastic album. |

Five years ago I 'fell' for a guy who lived in another state to me. We used to message each other constantly, lots of flirting, so much in common. I went to visit him and we didn't spend as much time together in person as I'd have liked (his dad had a fall and he had to be with his family). But he was quite a private person - "you're a mystery"... anyway... it fizzled out, he said he couldn't be what I wanted yada yada, it broke me at the time. Fast forward a year or so and I was thinking about this guy, I found his sister on social media and happened to discover that he had a child I didn't even know he had, and that he was still apparently with the child's mother... I sent him a pretty terse email lol. I hated the idea that I had slept with him whilst he was still with another woman!! We ended up talking about what happened and it was good to clear the air but man... I would never have gotten involved with him had I known! So yeah, this part of this song reminds me of him. |

I had help from a live version of this song (post lead singer William Arthur's death in 1999, Toby Martin from Youth Group sang with the other band members on tour in 2010). Any corrections please advise, cheers! The first line "Feel like I know her, but sometimes my arms bend back" is a direct quote from the TV show Twin Peaks. I absolutely love this song. There's something about the guitar and the way William sings it. "Sometimes she stands at the edge and pulls away" is my favourite line. |

And I really liked The Betrayed, but the lyrics are definitely darker... even Watkins himself said it was 'nasty' and portrayed his character :/ I dunno when all his awful behaviour started, and whether it seeped into the lyrics. I'm doing pretty well to disassociate their music and what he did as completely separate things. It's harder though, when he's the lead vocalist AND lyricist. But damn they had good music. I can listen to them and support the other band members and not condone what he did. | |

Agreeing with hyphen15 about the meaning of the song. Someone who gets a thrill from petty crime/life of drugs and getting away with it. I have just read 'Scar Tissue' and I feel I can relate it to Anthony's younger years. He and his mates were always involved in petty crime - theft, mostly, as well as trespassing, and doing drugs, mostly pot but sometimes coke. The "hell of an elevator" makes me think about Sonny Bono, who is Anthony's godfather. In 'Scar Tissue' Anthony talks about going to Sonny's house when he was 12, and in Sonny's mansion there was this 'carved-wood' elevator. Bored out of his mind, Anthony decided to 'play' on the elevator, going up and down, and then suddenly it got stuck and he had to be rescued. From the book: "Sonny never screamed at me or demeaned me in front of all the adults who were watching this rescue. He just calmly taught me a lesson to respect other people's property and not play in things that weren't meant to be played in. I never liked that there might be some expectation of how I should behave in order to be in that world. I was a twelve-year-old kid, destined to be misbehaving and out of line". "Come on God, do I seem bulletproof?" is a great line. Could be referring to his drug use and the sneaky things he used to do to get syringes or obtain the drugs, and after reading his book there are SO many situations he could have actually died, not necessarily from an overdose, but from where he had to go to get drugs :/ And being high whilst driving etc. "The medicated state of mind you find is overrated Oh I, do you? You saw it all come down and now it's time to imitate it Hey now, every time I lose altitude" Pretty self-explanatory I think. Every time he comes down from 'altitude' (being high) he needs to replicate that feeling somehow. He repeatedly says in 'Scar Tissue' that the first 'high' always feels the best, and the ones that come straight after never feel as good. You are always trying to replicate that first shot but are never able. |

I adore this song... I love the imagery in the lyrics. "This was broken from the start, the blueprint had no art, the architect of love does not remember us" There was no foundation to their love. They couldn't really even get started - hence, there being no blueprint (an architect's drawing). "We, remember to forget, the gift that was we met" They had an initial attraction and maybe they were keen to start a relationship but things fell apart for whatever reason. And they will both always remember that and feel wistful about the fact things could never be. However you like to interpret it, I can relate to it in my own way. I knew a guy and we were really attracted to each other. But despite multiple tries to start a relationship with him it just fell apart - he couldn't fully commit / had too many other priorities, and so it was definitely "broken from the start"... The architect of love won't remember us!! haha... |

This song is not about Christ. Not about Hillel. Not about anything else other than Kiedis' dad Blackie Dammett, and coming to terms with how he was raised and forgiving his dad for those past mistakes (inadvertently introducing him to drugs, sex, etc at a young age). And when he says "you were always my favourite", I read that Kiedis used to spend summertime with his dad when he was younger (when still living full time with his mum in Grand Rapids, MI) and he said he idolised his dad and loved every moment he spent in LA with him. A really amazing song and Frusciante's vocals in the 'calmer' parts really add something beautiful. |

Great song! I think the meaning of this song is pretty obvious. It's about a man who seems to have everything together: he can dance, he can get himself out of problems, dresses well, a smooth-talker who will get his way and 'walk all over you'. However, 'something is missing' in his life. I think calling him 'Mr Big' paints him as an arrogant person who has talked himself up. In actual fact, despite all his perceived perfection, he's actually an unhappy person inside (maybe he has no friends or partner because of his attitude!). It's like Iva is calling him out on it. Perhaps this guy just needs to take a step back and stop trying so hard, get some humility, and maybe then he will find happiness. Yes I probably didn't need to go into so much detail, but isn't what this site is all about? :) |
