Crosses Lyrics

Don't you know that I'll be around to guide you
Through your weakest moments to leave them behind you
Returning nightmares, only shadows

We'll cast some light and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now

Crosses all over, heavy on your shoulders
The sirens inside me waiting to step forward
Disturbing silence darkens your sight

We'll cast some light and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now

Crosses all over the boulevard
Crosses all over the boulevard
Crosses all over the boulevard
Crosses all over the boulevard

The streets outside your window overflooded
People staring, they know you've been broken
Repeatedly reminded by the looks on their faces
Ignore them tonight and you'll be alright

We'll cast some light and you'll be alright

how are there not more comments for this song? it's so good to me. Especially when you really need someone to shine the light on you. To me, it's about reawakening after a period of feeling so helpless and somebody lifting you out of the darkness. That's kind of obvious, but still so good.

I agree, I was expecting more responses on such a great song.

this is a jose gonzalez song, unless he redid it with zero 7

yes, he re-recorded it with zero 7. and he's the one who sings it with zero 7, by the way.

i think it has to do with Jesus

"crosses all over, heavy on your shoulders"-- carrying the cross, and also a representation of our carrying our own burdens.

the first verse really makes it clear to me. "don't you know that i'll be around to guide you..."

this is just one great song with a positive message.

I think this song pretty much says it... it's about Christianity; namely Jesus. I don't see any other way around it. It was the first Zero 7 song that gave me the suspicious that they write sometimes about Christianity. Not necessarily a Christian band, but the theme definitely pops up more often than it to be a coincidence.

We see in the first stanza of the song (Don't you know I'll be around to guide you // Through your weakest moments and leave them behind you) that they take the lines almost directly from Scripture. (Matt. 28:20 "I am with you always, to the end of the age). Jesus also notably forgave and exalted many sinners in his time (thus leaving their "weakest moments" behind them).

The "crosses" stanza is pretty much self-explanatory. "The streets outside your window over flooded // People staring, they know you've been broken," is remnant of Jesus' own struggle as he carried his literal cross, but also indicative of the crosses we all carry in our daily lives, and the ridicule we receive for some of them. But ignore them. He will "cast some light," and it will "be alright."

I could be completely off here--just projecting--but this song and "Your Place" (with all the children playing in the background--remember Jesus when he said "Let the children come to me, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these...") make me think Zero 7 pays tribute to their religious beliefs every now and then in their music and lyrics.

Either way, one of the more beautiful songs I've heard in my life.

My Interpretation

@Habakkuk15 I can certainly see that this song could be about God/Jesus. I'm not religious myself, so I simply see it as somebody helping another person out of their darkness/depression and the crosses they have been bearing in their life. A beautiful song no matter how you interpret it! Really lifts the spirits I think :)
